Proposal: Stack Overflow (in Spanish)

Is there any update about when is the Spanish Stack Overflow site going to launch?

  • I suspect you won't see any new site launches now until after new year, when everyone's back, but hopefully after Christmas one of the SE Employees could confirm?

Stack Overflow in portuguese got a private beta and, besides its very young age and besides still being private, it is a very healthy beta. They fixed a couple of bugs about non-ascii tag characters, specially about characters like é, ç and ñ. So, it is likely that this proposal will get a happy new year! Commented Dec 26, 2013 at 3:02

I will be posting more details as an announcement / discussion here shortly, but I wanted to tell you the good news now.

Work will begin on Stack Overflow In Spanish starting on August 1, with an expected launch date landing in the end of October / first week in November. A private beta will probably be available way before that, as well as plenty of room for folks that want to help us finish translations on Transifex.

Something more formal will be posted tomorrow, but I couldn't wait to tell everyone the good news, so here it is :)

  • I tried (6 days ago) to join the "Stack Overflow in spanish translation team" in Transifex, but maybe I'm not doing it well. Did I miss something [more formal will be posted tomorrow]? Commented Jul 22, 2015 at 17:16

Stack Overflow em Português is our first* foray into localizing Stack Overflow into languages other than English. The good news is that the private beta is going well. Look forward to hearing about public beta in the new year. For more on the reasons for picking Portuguese, listen to a recent podcast featuring Gabe Koscky.

We are also actively seeking Community Manager candidates for a Japanese Stack Overflow. Japan is another huge market for programmers who don't prefer to operate in English, so it's next on our list. Depending on how those experiments pan out, we'll be looking to expand into other languages.

Turkish, Spanish, and Russian are obvious candidates, but we'd want to make sure that we have resources available to make these sites a success. We hope that our Brazilian friends will help us figure out what's needed.

* There are several sites for people who are interested in learning about other languages and we've implemented minor features to make it easier to use languages other than English, but the goal with Portuguese Stack Overflow is to create a site where people for people to use entirely in that language. Stack Overflow en Español would have the same goal.

Is there a time frame if the Portuguese beta goes well? A year? 6 months?

  • @raygo: No timeframe, I'm afraid. Obviously, a successful launch will be an encouraging sign for other proposals.
