There are a few posts from many years ago saying that Stack Overflow in Turkish was on hold until after Stack Overflow in Portuguese was ironed out, and it seemed like Turkish was one of the next priorities of the Stack Exchange team along with Spanish and Russian.

However, these posts are from 5-7 years ago, SO in Spanish and Russian has already launched, and the latest post I've found from 5 years ago says that it will be a little while before Stack Exchange commits to a new language. Furthermore, there are no proposals on Area51 for Turkish SO.

Is there any update on Stack Overflow in Turkish? Is Turkish SO still on hold or has it been abandoned?

  • StackOverflow in Russian wasn't launched, it was imported from Hashcode.ru (the Area 51 proposal isn't related to the actual site).

    Hashcode.ru was a Russian-language clone of Stack Exchange. About five years ago, Stack Exchange acquired it and merged some of the sites on it with the rest of the Stack Exchange network.

    @Mark alright, I'm confused though how that pertains to the question? Regardless of semantics, there are existing Stackoverflow sites in Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese afaik, so I'm curious what the official status on a Turkish Stackoverflow is

All the previously proposed Stack Overflow in {Language} proposals were closed and eventually deleted. We do not have any plans to establish further non-English sites on the network, as in it appears nowhere in any roadmap for the foreseeable future.

Because of that, it did not make sense to keep them sitting around indefinitely. If in the unlikely event we ever do decide to accept non-English sites again, the list of committers would be extremely stale with low-interest users. Those proposals would need to start over anyways.
