As for now, three international proposals are blocked and there's going to be a fourth one very soon (SO in Spanish) because international features are not available yet. Since a year2 years has passed since this question has been asked, is there a chance we will see international features in the near future?

Proposal: Stack Overflow in Spanish

Update: Stack Exchange is hiring a Spanish Community Manager. The time is nigh :)

Yes. I do apologize that it's been so long since we first started talking about supporting additional languages, but I can tell you that we haven't forgotten and it's increasingly become a priority. Part of the delay is that we simply didn't have enough people to work on this while still continuing all of our other projects that were in progress (not to mention the standard maintenance work to support 100+ sites). We've expanded our technical team substantially in the past 6 months, and we will be starting work on this project in the next couple of weeks.

It's a large undertaking, so it will still be a few more months before we're ready to talk about a specific launch date for Stack Overflow in Some Other Language, but almost our entire developer team will be working mostly on the localization project until it's complete. Thanks for bearing with us - we're as excited as you are to launch international versions of Stack Overflow!

How can we get a feedback about the progress of SOiS, in order to have an idea on how long it's gonna take? Thanks in advance! Commented Jul 12, 2013 at 13:27

@OscarRyz our first localized site will be Stack Overflow in Portuguese, which we're looking to launch into private beta very soon. (It's not following a normal Area51 launch, though, since it's such an old proposal, and we will certainly need to do a lot of de-bugging of the localized site.)

@SysDragon We launched Portuguese Stack Overflow in January, and have been watching and learning. We'll begin work on Stack Overflow in a different language soon.

[update 2013.08.27]

"Localization is progressing" causes a bug in the comments system.

I think this is being followed up in this Meta: Localization: The state of the nation?.

There's a fresh update:

Quick update (August 2013):

We are actually working on localization.

ETA: still 6–8 arbitrary units of time.

Units of time

Units of time!

Hopefully, this will be weeks rather than months, or years, god forbid.

You can already forget weeks, and there are already months, and only 6-8 months before it became years for remaining pending sites ;) Commented Jan 31, 2014 at 9:19

As Marc Gravell posted in the meta of the stackoverflow in portuguese, we had some advances:

This basically relates to a "hack" that we made many years ago, when we were using SQL server full text search to handle many tag features. Due to technical reasons, the way we implemented this was by using some special characters to represent values that otherwise would not be searchable - +, ., - etc - which occur commonly in programming tags. Even though we had long since ceased using full text search for this, when it came time to add international tag support, these special tokens still remained in the code. The values that were blocked were:

à é ñ ç ö û

Not a large number, but enough to be problematic on br.stackoverflow.com.

We have now taken the time to revisit this code, removing the last traces of this old "hack". The good news is that you should now be able to use these last 6 characters.

At the current time this is enabled only on meta.br.stackoverflow.com - to limit impact while we validate the changes. These changes will be deployed to br.stackoverflow.com as soon as we're sure that we won't damage the site in any way.
