Proposal: Materials Modeling

Currently, for this proposal, even though the number of followers has almost reached the requirement, the numbers of questions with score 10+ is far from that needed to move to the next phase (26 more questions with 10+ needed). And the 4 month limit for a proposal to complete definition will be reached within December 20 (I think). In spite of having a vast community spread around the web in the topic as explained in this answer, this proposal has not been able to reach the minimum requirements till now and is far from reaching it.

So, is there something that can be done to promote this site within the existing community spread out in other SE sites as well as in sites such as ResearchGate and in forums and mailing lists of many packages such as VASP, QE, ABINIT, CASTEP, DFTB+, LAMMPS, CPMD, CP2K etc?

EDIT: We've created a chatroom to discuss anything regarding this Proposal. Anyone may join the chatroom here.

There's currently a Facebook group with 269 members. That is more than enough members to reach the 140 total number of additional upvotes required to get 40 questions with 10 upvotes each, and it would be enough to meet the 200 member requirement for the commitment phase.

If only 28 of the 269 members of the Facebook group were to use their 5 allowed upvotes, we could easily get the 140 upvotes necessary. The problem is that a lot of people clearly are having a hard time signing up and figuring out what to do. You can see this just by looking at the comments written by people on the Facebook posts. It appears that the Drones and Model Aviation group also had the same problem with some of the users:

We also don't benefit from the availability of some popular YouTuber that can help advertise, as was the case for Drones and Model Aviation. Perhaps Rashid is correct that we should start campaigning on ResearchGate and other places such as the VASP forum. Can you help to start this Rashid?

I think a good way to campaign in other websites would be to make a small message conveying (a) what the site is about, (b) why it is relevant and (c) what one should do to help the proposal (including upvoting questions with upvotes <10). This can then be posted in these other websites. I think this great answer by @user1271772 would be a good one to start.

  • We now need about 120 more upvotes in total. If 24 people use all 5 upvotes, we'll get there. Commented Dec 11, 2019 at 9:56
  • @rashid: have you been able to advertise on some of those communities? I have been working around the clock to recruit followers from Facebook, and from the forums of CFOUR, MOLPRO, OpenMOLCAS and DIRAC, but I'm not a member of the VASP community. VASP is probably the largest audience. Commented Dec 11, 2019 at 15:26
  • @user1271772 I haven't advertised anything in those communities until now. I have only contacted the people I know personally. How are you recruiting people from the communities you mentioned. Are you personally contacting the members or have you put up a post in the corresponding forums. I am not sure whether posting on the forums for this purpose would be considered appropriate by the members

I found it extremely difficult and confusing to register. You first need to join "Meta Stack Exchange". And you have to actually verify your email address in two separate emails, which made me a bit confused.

Eventually after persistent trying, I managed to join and even ask my own questions.

I have taken the time to show how I did it, starting from here:

This takes me to the page:

I filled in my Name, Email and Password, and then clicked Sign-Up. This showed up:

I got an email to join "Meta Stack Exchange":

I clicked "confirm", then went back to Materials Modeling and clicked "Follow", which lead me here:

Then I had to confirm another email. This time not for "Meta Stack Exchange" but for "Area 51":

After verifying my email address this second time, my "follow" actually finally counts, and I could vote for some questions.

  • I think this answer is not for the question I asked and is for another question. And you have answered it there itself. My question was specifically on ways to promote this site within the broader community spread out in other websites as detailed in my question and here.

Now that we are in the commitment phase, our effort would be best spent in trying to encourage our existing followers and committers to earn 200+ reputation on some site, and to attract other members with 200+ reputation to commit. We will not have any problem at all in reaching the other requirements.

I haven't seen the posts about it yet, but most years around this time a Community Promotion Ads post is put up on all the meta sites. Users vote on ads they want displayed in the sidebar that they think would be useful to their site audience. If someone could come up with an ad that fits the parameters, there are a few sites (chem, phys, comp sci, etc) that would probably be receptive.

  • That is an excellent idea! I did not know about this! Those ads in the link you provided, all look very awesome. I noticed that most of those ad suggestions came from you, would you be able to make one for Materials Modeling Stack Exchange? I do not have any experience with making graphics or images. Unfortunately, I found all of those attached to existing projects rather than making them. It may be worthwhile to put out a call for someone to make an ad graphic.

  • @rashid, do you know anyone that can make graphics like the ones in the link Tyberius provided? Commented Feb 18, 2020 at 18:16
