Proposal: *Beer *

One of the other proposed recreational sites is Alcoholic Beverages. Wouldn't having both Beer and Alcoholic Beverages just confuse users and interfere with each other?

In my opinion, all the alcohol related proposals would be better off combined under one site (Beer, Whisky, Wine, Alcoholic Beverages). Since Alcoholic Beverages is the most broad, that would make the most sense.

How about we add cocktails and mixology to the proposal?

  • Neophytes might be confused but true consumers of beer vs. wine vs. spirits know the difference. ;-)

What @docmartn said. Honestly this is really frustrating. If alcoholic beverages is combined with this proposal, is there a way for people who previously committed to un-commit? Commented Jan 6, 2014 at 17:14
  • Should Homebrewing SE be combined also? Should Distillation be admitted too?

I think that they should be combined. Alcoholic Beverages seems to cover everything that Beer does.

Being a beer guy and a newbie to the SE, my vote would be to have a separate SE for beer. Alcohol is a very broad category and personally I wouldn't want to have to wade through a bunch of comments and questions about wine and spirits. Maybe there could be 3 SE's. Beer, Wine and Spirits... although I could see some arguing for further bifurcation in spirits like scotches, whiskeys, cordials, etc. To mdma's point above, why have separate SE sites if it's a matter of tagging.

thus you would subscribe to the beer tag on Alcoholic-Beverages.SE and when you visited the site could look only at new questions with that tag. Commented Jan 7, 2014 at 16:38

Perhaps the tea and coffee proposed SEs could also be included in a 'Beverages' SE.

I would say keep them separate. Appreciation of beer is different from appreciation of wine, mead, vodka, whiskey etc.

    That's why you have tags.

then why have separate SE sites at all? Just tag everything. Of course, it's not done like that so where is the dividing line between combining sites with distinct areas and not combining them?

You have a seperate page when you have a big enough user base so that a page can exist on it's own. I doubt that "beer" or other specific proposals will be sustainable alone, so I think it would be a good idea to combine them with similar proposals. Like stackoverflow.com does: They don't have a seperate page for each programming language, either.

  • @Uooo Interestingly, based on the current status of proposals, it looks like Beer is the one that does have a big enough user base on its own.

@Uooo - if there are not enough users to sustain beer, then let it die out on its own. Let the followers here go over to alcoholic beverages. Why not let things play out on its own. I think a lot of people who already committed (like me) would not have if they had known that a ton of crap from alcoholic beverages was going to be merged in. Commented Jan 6, 2014 at 17:20
