Proposal: Open Science

At the time of writing we have 60 followers but only 31 questions. Over half of followers have not suggested any example questions. Since we have enough followers to move to commitment stage, and we are only being held back by the lack of example questions, I wanted to find out if any of you feel hesitant in suggesting questions, and whether there's anything that can be done to encourage new questions.

Does anyone have any suggestion of types of questions that we are missing? If you've already asked your 5 questions but can see that we need questions on topic ABC, then posting an answer here gives other followers some inspiration on what to ask about.

Remember, if you're not sure whether a certain question would be welcome or fit with the site, that's what this stage is all about - just ask it and see if it gets upvoted or downvoted. Even downvoted questions are useful at this stage to give everyone a clear example of what the site will not cover.

    I'd be inclined to require from every follower at least 1 example question in order to be able to "follow", but I don't know if it's not too radical. At first, I've proposed that the site proposal author be required to create example questions: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/231549/…

    I proposed creating a bookmark option to separate followers from "casually interested" people. If they can't be bothered to create example questions and vote then they're probably not going to be active supporters of the site (which is what the follower count is supposed to measure). discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/14470/…

  • Although I like the ideas in both these comments, I think the current system already works since the requirement to wait for enough upvoted questions ensures that a proposal will never get into beta based only on casual followers.

If you don't have sufficient example questions it is an indicator that your proposal has a flaw. When I browsed by this proposal a couple days ago, I personally thought the scope was a bit to narrow. Take a look at ebooks 150 days in beta, and 350 questions. The possible scope there seems much wider than here, but it is slowly dieing.

If you have to ask "Does anyone have any suggestion of types of questions that we are missing?" that seems clear the volume of questions and answers required for a successful site just does not exist in the current scope.

  • My opinion having seen this answer is that either you are right, and the proposal will die, or it requires far more followers before there will be enough breadth of insight to generate the required questions. I think the double requirement for enough followers and enough questions is particularly useful here. Some proposals get to beta with relatively few followers who all ask 5 questions and are all very engaged. Other proposals have followers who are not as engaged, and the double requirement forces such proposals to wait for far more followers before being allowed into beta.
