Should the "Genealogy" proposal be renamed "Family History" or maybe "Genealogy and Family History" or "Family History and Genealogy".

GeneJ proposed this to me with the reasoning that the word "family history" is far more engaging internationally than "genealogy", but she was unable to post the discussion topic and asked me to.

p.s. Does anyone know how we would make the name change assuming a decision is agreed on by most people to make a change?

  • Thanks, Justin. It's good to know that the proposer can change it. If the group decides to, then it would be worthwhile to republicize on all fronts.

Yes. We should change the name to "Genealogy and Family History" to be internationally relevant and inclusive. In some usage or cultures, the two terms are used interchangeably; in others, the terms have different meanings. Let's just be inclusive.

Yes. The terms genealogy and family-history are now widely regarded as distinct. The Society of Genealogists publish a distinction on their web site: http://www.sog.org.uk/education/gandfh.shtml.

  • By that definition, Family History incorporates Genealogy. Therefore, "Family History" alone or maybe "Family History including Genealogy" may be better. Of course, the current one line description under the site was IMO very good from the start stating: "Proposed Q&A site for genealogy enthusiasts, family historians, professional genealogists, and serious amateurs."

A simple change in the title to either "Genealogy and Family History" or "Family History and Genealogy" will do the job.
