Proposal: Genealogy & Family History

A chat area for this proposal has been created, called: "Roots"

Visit it at: http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/6003/roots where you can talk live to other Committers to the proposal.

Or if no one is there, leave a message, and come back later.

This chat is associated with Area 51. It seems you need to have earned 20 reputation at Area 51 to be able to say something in the chat, but anyone can browse. Stack Exchange uses these little techniques to get you to participate (even if just minimally) to get privileges. To get 20 points on Area 51, contribute a couple of good questions to another proposal and get a couple of upvotes on them. You don't have to follow or commit to that proposal to contribute a question.

See this discussion with people bitching about the 20 points needed: Reputation 20 for Chat

Once we have our Beta going, we will have a chat for our Beta, and you'll have to earn 20 reputation on our Genealogy & Family History Q&A site, which will be very easy for all of us.

Actually, in the private beta, the privilege thresholds are even lower. It should be possible to chat even at 1 reputation, unless things have changed significantly since the last time I was part of a private beta.

Most private betas last 7 to 14 days, so it's important that everyone involved participate in discussions of very important issues related to the site topic. By the time the beta goes public, everyone should have more than 20 rep, if they've been participating in the private beta and honoring their commitment. :)

How many people can be in the chat room at one time? I see no way to enter anything when clicking the link- only the text of previous posts.

  • Andy: The problem may be that you need 20 reputation to chat. They don't say what the 20 reputation is or how to get it, but you currently only have 54 points at Area 51. They probably don't count the 51 you got for signing up and verifying your email. Meaning you really only earned 3 points so far. See: stackoverflow.com/privileges/chat – lkessler Oct 7 '12 at 1:59
  • Thanks Louis, that is probably it so it looks like I won't be chatting. Simply too busy with other things to worry about gaining "Rep". – Andy Hatchett Oct 7 '12 at 2:31
  • Andy: Wait until we're in Beta (which shouldn't be long). It will be easy for each of us to gain the 20 rep with a couple of Q's or A's in our own domain. – lkessler Oct 7 '12 at 3:26
  • @lkessler - Wait until we're in Beta (which shouldn't be long). When do you think this will be? – Alex Oct 9 '12 at 5:45
  • @Alex - I don't know. Maybe today? – lkessler Oct 9 '12 at 12:42
  • With the register/commit process and this delay, people could lose any interest in the Q&A site. I hope things get better. – William Oct 9 '12 at 20:01
  • @William - I am new to this concept as well, but read very positive comments that the process is well worth the wait. It seems sites which move out of Beta are nearly always successful. – Those Legs Oct 9 '12 at 20:13

In lieu of following the link above, I clicked on the Stack Exchange button in the upper left portion of the screen. There was a choice for 'Chat'. I followed that to a page that offered me the room 'Roots'. I was logged in and saw a pink box at the bottom of the page which would have allowed me to post something or respond to anyone else who was chatting there.

Try that and see of you can post this way.

  • That method takes you to exactly the same place. I think the problem for Andy is reputation. See my comment to Andy's answer. – lkessler Oct 7 '12 at 2:01

If you click on the link from @lkessler, there will be a pink box at the bottom of the chat room. Just type in that box.
