Proposal: Arts and Crafts

As per the discussion here I'd like to propose a change in the proposal description.

Arts and Crafts
Proposed Q&A site for questions about traditional artwork and handmade items.
Proposed Q&A site for artists and craftsmen, about traditional artwork and handmade items.

The intention behind this change is to make explicit that professional artists and craftswomen and craftsmen are welcome, similar to how language proposals say "for teachers, linguists, and learners", etc.

It seems that the proposal creator endorses this change, but the change can only be done by a moderator, so I guess a dedicated post is the best way of seeing if the community would support this change.

As a former student-turned-enthusiast with a really really long history in this space, I am neither an artist nor a craftsman. Am I allowed here?

Arts & Crafts is a Q&A site for artists, craftsmen, amateurs, professionals, students, ex-students, retirees, hobbyists, teachers, designers, scholars, researchers, historians, tinkerers, and other people who have questions about traditional artwork and handmade items.

One of the mistakes of Area 51 is that it asks you to "describe your audience" as a way to define a site — and that typically results in some very long and hollow descriptions that add very little to just having the title on its own. Everyone is invited. We get it. Sites are much easier to explain by <subject> rather than the <title> of the people welcome to use it (usually), so we're trying to get away from bulking up the descriptions in the name of being "all inclusive" unnecessarily.

Don't start futzing with your description now. It got you this far and everything is going really well. We don't create a lot of insular "member only" sites, so I seriously doubt if craft professionals are mulling over their credentials wondering if they will be welcomed to use a site about "Arts & Crafts".

It simply is not necessary.

Besides, the single most important design element of a new site is the questions on the front page ← Aw, crud… I just gave away the surprise ending of a pretty good blog post. Meh, it's a good read anyway. Have a look.

  • I hear what you're saying. Actually, the original proposal description was more along the lines of a long list. I don't remember when it was changed, so I don't know if the current description "got us this far", although I think it didn't prevent around 80 people from clicking "Commit!". Anyway, you say it doesn't matter and you are probably right.

    @Earthliŋ When a proposal reaches the later stages of this process, it is reviewed by the Community Team and the descriptions are edited in preparation of the site launch.

I am glad that you bothered to write this post. I wanted to write it but was just feeling lazy.

I think we should make it absolutely clear that this site is not only for hobbyists but also for professionals.

AFA the example questions are concerned, I would like to tell that majority of the top voted questions were copied from the previously closed versions of crafts and painting proposals. That was because we didn't want to loose content before the deletion of those old proposals.

I mention this because I don't want anyone to look at the example questions and assume that professionals have no business here.
