Proposal: Jewish life and learning

Is it too late, impossible, or inappropriate to create a cute name for the site about Judiasm? If not, I recommend KiddushCupOverflow.com because a kiddush cup is used to drink from in Jewish rituals and it goes with the whole "overflow" in the Stack Overflow theme.

This proposal is based on an existing SE 1.0 site with what I think is a pretty apt name: mi.yodeya (explanation).

The problem with using Hebrew words is that they don't have an unambiguous transliteration. If you tell somebody to go to "mi yodeya dot com", they will likely type it in wrong. Even "Kiddush" could have multiple spellings.

  • @Gabe, I agree that it's an issue, but it's mitigated by the fact that I own miyodeya.com and by Google's "Did you mean" feature. Commented Apr 22, 2011 at 22:28

I had the same issue when a friend first told me about the site: it took me quite a while to find it (with google and all). It was mostly the spelling of yodeya.

  • @Joseph Thanks for that information. What spelling[s] of "yodeya" did you try first? Commented Apr 29, 2011 at 19:58
  • @Issac Moses I don't remember exactly (after being on mi.yodeya for such a long time, it's hard to imagine spelling it any other way). But things like: yodeiah, yudeia. Particularly because it was a subdomain (which my friend conveniently forgot to mention). All I remember was that it took a long time to find it. Of course this problem only really applies to word of mouth. Any online mediums would not have the problem.

  • @Joseph FWIW, mi.yodeya.com is just the official URL. yodeya.com and miyodeya.com both point to the same place. Commented May 1, 2011 at 4:28
  • @Issac Moses indeed. My point is just that transliteration affects a large percentage of Jewish sites, and unless one sees the URL in print, there is bound to be some error in "word-of-mouth" transmission. On the flip side: I really do think we should keep this domain. Maybe just work on SEO so that it's easier to find on Google.

I like it but it's too long. Personally,

I think Mi.Yodeya is cute, but not necessarily the only possible name. Perhaps something shorter, like TorahOverflow.com would work too.
