Proposal: Data Science

Will questions that are about code related to big data or data science on-topic?

Does this mean that programming questions (related to data science) will be accepted here? Does this also mean that there will be tags like or for questions about code written in a specific language?

These types of questions might be better suited for Stack Overflow, since they are about code, but if they are focused on a question about the data processing specifically, then does that make them on-topic here?

I would say: yes.

If your question is about data retrieval, data storage, data processing, data visualization etc. then it should be on-topic on Data Science. Also, whether you're using Python, R, Mahout, Orange, SPSS or any other language/software - all data-related questions should fit well on Data Science.

In case your question is more mathematical/theoretical, you might consider posting it on Cross Validated. And if you're struggling with some errors/exceptions or any other pure programming problems then SO is the right place to go (these questions should be off-topic on Data Science).

  • CrossValidated is definitely not just for mathematical and theoretical questions - it's "a question and answer site for people interested in statistics, machine learning, data analysis, data mining, and data visualization." There are hundreds of data viz questions there, a couple thousand machine learning questions, and the most highly voted question is about using Python as a statistics workbench.
