Thank you for deciding to follow Embedded Systems Programming and Design. We are asking you to cast votes for the examples questions, and also to check back to the proposal frequently for new discussions, questions, scope updates, and phase movements.

Currently we are in the commitment phase of the proposal. This is where those who are interested in the site commit to using the site if/when it becomes a Stack Exchange beta site.

Voting

Do not believe the myth that voting on a question that has more than 10 votes does not help. I thought this very same thing, however the truth is that it further helps to define the site. For example, imagine the following two questions were proposed:

How do I port u-boot to a new board?

Does the blackfin processor have an MMU, which is required to run Linux?

and they both have 10 votes. Just from looking at the votes it appears that these questions would have equal interest on the site. However, the reality is that there will likely be more people that want to know how to port u-boot, than whether or not [processor] has [feature], so be voting up (or down) either question would show the difference in how interested the community is in seeing this site answered.

With that being said, don't be afraid to downvote questions as well. If you feel a question wouldn't be a good fit for the site, downvoting the question will show that clearly. Typically following up a downvote with a comment as to why the question was voted down is a good practice.

I know what I'm saying is against the grain of 'Vote up questions that are close to 10 so we can move on', but that doesn't guarantee the best possible site, and a clear definition of what will be on/off topic for the site. The most important aspect of voting is to use your votes.

Promote

Be sure to promote the site as much as you can. Any other forums or social network sites where you frequent, where others might be interested in the site will help.

Please be aware there are right and wrong ways to promote the site.

Right

Promoting the proposal on a forum that you frequent and are respected on by adding a link in your signature.

Wrong

Signing up on a forum just to promote this site, trolling others sites and promoting this as an alternative.

Those are just two examples. The more people who know about the site, the better. If we make it to the beta, 1500 visits/day is currently a good beta (that could change, FYI). The more who know about the site then potentially more visits we will have.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, as the proposal progresses I will update this accordingly. Please feel free to leave an answer or comment if I've missed something, or some other info should be added in general.

Bump

Have people read this? We've reached the followers we need, but every hasn't exercised their votes or asked their 5 questions, and we cannot move on w/out it.

Frankly, I don't like people telling me what to do. These may all be valid points, but keep in mind that we're not your followers. We're followers of a proposal (that you have initiated, but that's quite irrelevant).

  • @Camil, I think you're taking this a little too strongly. This is meant as a how to for people who are new to A51. Furthermore, I added this same question to the original proposal of the site, of which I was not the creator. I merely copied the question here because people are confused about the logistics of the whole process. Also, the 'we' I refer to in the question is everyone else who has an interest in the site coming to fruition, we. You see I said 'we are asking...', I, nor we, are not trying to tell anyone what to do, but merely asking, for the sake of the site.

I really don't think it's the idea we have such a tutorial post for every proposal. That should be done site-wide, or not. But you're free to post what you want, of course. I just find that the title not really fit to a tutorial for newbies, if that's what this question is intended to be.

You make a valid case, and the information is out there, mostly scrapped from the FAQ, but people who came here explicitly for this prop are less likely to read the FAQ, you know.

I disagree with you, and I think you can very well understand. I didn't mean to change anything directly, just wanted to let you know.

@MahendraGunawardena My apologies, bad timing, I actually just got out of a brutal Signals and Systems summer class, and had to travel for class. This is sad.

If I may suggest a way to promote: If you're working in Embedded, tell your co-workers (the technical ones, no need to pull your janitor in...) and I'm sure they could both contribute and benefit from it.

A small story from my workplace: I stumbled upon some serious problem writing a program, asked my co-workers for help, they couldn't think up anything off top of their heads, but they promised to look and ask around. Meanwhile, I posted the question with my problem to StackOverflow. Fifteen minutes later an answer was posted... by the guy from the next room over. He checked SO, found my question (without realizing it's mine), then got lucky in researching the problem, found the solution, posted the answer to SO, then he came to my room to tell me, and recognized it was me just accepting his answer on SO, after I tried that the solution works.

...so the fact your co-workers may be in the next room over doesn't mean you can't meaningfully cooperate over StackExchange!
