Proposal: Sexuality

Since this site will be discussing a lot sex related topics having a place to put your personal sexual data would be convenient.

Yet another possibilty would be encouraging people to put it in their about me.

What do you think?

I can appreciate your eagerness to get started, but this is really an issue to be hashed out by the community who is actually going to build this site when it is created. This late in the process, closing this as "off topic" seems kind of moot, but this is really outside the scope of Area 51, and no real decisions like this are going to be made here. You can already do this right in your "About Me" if you want. However, I don't see any reason it needs to be encouraged or enforced or have a special place. Especially since you may want to encourage urologists, gynecologists, and sexologists to lend their (objective, impersonal) expertise, and in their case it is (or at least ought to be) irrelevant. I guess I don't see why it needs to be encouraged unless it's relevant in a specific question's context; this won't be a pickup / dating site. Commented Jun 18, 2015 at 1:51

Proposal: add "ASL" to profile, and rename the site "AOL" :)

The "about me" section is freeform and would be best suited to describe the vast array of sexual preferences out there than any list we could on the site itself.

It'll be up to the site's community to define what they want to do... Although I personally wouldn't expect a lot of people to be super into describing the gory details of what they're into in a publicly Google-indexed (and therefore easily searchable) field.

  • I know that not everybody will use this feature but I think having a good place (more fields under bio) to put this fairly relevant information would be good.

@BrainStone All profile fields are available network-wide, and we don't need to know anyone's sexual preferences on, say, Stack Overflow. So, that's not going to happen, sorry. Not to mention how easy it would be for us to end up accidentally excluding a bunch of identities or preferences.

  • Good to know. I didn't know that all profile fields are availdable in the entire network.

@AnnaLear Sort of orthogonal to the question under scrutiny, but profiles can be site-specific. Usually, when I create a new profile on an SE site, I just import all the stuff from the other sites, but you can change your "About Me" for a single site. Of course, someone can still click on the link from your profile on one site to your profile on another site to see what differences there might be, but the two profiles are effectively profiles in a few ways (and this is one). @parthian True. The content can be separate... but the fields are the same across the board. If folks in the community want to amend their "about me" sections to include any extra info, that's totally cool. But I don't see us adding special network-wide fields for sexual orientation, etc.

@AnnaLear Agreed. A lot of work in dev and design to accommodate another free-form field would be kinda silly. Commented Jun 18, 2015 at 1:56
