Every Latinist above the high school level (and even most within it!) are competent in or expert at the context of Latin. This isn't a modern language! The point is different. I think we could only increase the appeal in the sub as well as filter out just homework questions by keeping it strictly Latin. Or strictly Roman, at that. I know there are plenty of us Classicists in colleges who would love to get students to know more than just basic Latin.
Jun 1, 2015 at 19:02 comment added Ben Kovitz As I understand the FAQ, it suggests that we seek to create strong appeal to experts rather than broad appeal. There are tens of thousands of serious Latinists in the world, and interest in Latin seems to be growing, so I don't think we need to worry about the number of people who'd be interested. We just have to make sure that we interest those people strongly enough to keep them participating. Certainly there must be a way to allow plenty of "context" without diluting the topic, though.
