I joined a public safety shooting range. Next time I go, I plan to talk to the range officers about the Firearms SE site.

If each person who has committed to this so far can get 5 more people to commit, will that be enough to bring this site to Beta?

What about Gun Stores? Will they be open to helping to promote this site?

I'm guessing the general problem with this will be that a Firearms Q&A site might provide an alternative to talking to a gunsmith / salesman. As such, by promoting a site like this (especially in their own store), they might be preventing people from coming in with questions, which could have lead to a sale. Given, a question asked on the site might get an answer which leads to a sale at the store, but these are all hard to quantify.

My best guess for this is that this will depend upon the owner of the store / range. Some might be open to promoting a Q&A site, whereas others may not be. The only real way to know is to ask.

I think if those owners/operators of the store also joined the proposal and could showcase their expertise, it could create a positive feedback loop for their own business - have a link on their company website, for example, with their Firearms.SE flair :)

  • The key is that directly advertising their commercial ventures violates the SE rules as I read them. I think your technique is a wise one that would give the professional a voice without becoming a shill for their services.

Surf shops like surf Q&A sites, so the same would apply to firearms. It could draw people to their store.
