Proposal: Blender

In my opinion, having 3D Modelling as the overarching site would do better than having a site dedicated to Blender, or Maya, or any other 3d modelling software, for that matter.

+1, A site for 'Blender' is like having an SE site for one game console only, or for a specific genre of film. But there was a 3D modelling proposal a while ago that got shut down. :( Commented Feb 5, 2013 at 2:07

Blender is not just about 3D modeling, texturing and animating program.

But Blender is a tool, and it's incredibly specific if we have a site just for Blender. Because using Blender means you'll be doing something along the lines of modelling, rigging, and texturing, having an overarching site works better. Also the fact that there are very few professional modelling/texturing/rigging softwares out there

  • The CAD proposal has also garnered a small following. CAD software packages are a form of 3d modelling software, although their purpose is for technical design rather than creative design. There are other technical software packages that can be considered 3d software such as Paraview and Tecplot (visualization software). If there were to be an aggregate SE '3D Software and Modelling' site, it would be good to emphasize the fact that it is geared toward creative 3d design so it is not confused with other types of 3d software. • Why 3D Software AND modelling??... this is a dumb proposal.

  • @darkgaze If it's such a dumb proposal, explain how, instead of just saying "it's dumb". Your comment has 0 merit unless you can explain why you think it's dumb.

  • @thinlyveiledquestionmark Yes, you are right. It is as dumb (respectfull, really) as proposing: let's create a group on Languages of the World AND arabic synonymes. :-) I don't have a better example than that. Let's create a group about The World Nature AND the accoupplement of the ant. Why 3DSoftware in the world AND modelling, among everything else... A very generic but misleading name at the same time.

  • @darkgaze I don't get what your point is? 3d software and modelling are two closely related things. Your examples fail to show how 3d software and modelling are two totally different things?

  • @thinlyveiledquestionmark ... They are related, but then the title should be given the name: 3D Modelling, which is is what is is about. One thing is the big 3D software, other is the particular 3D Modelling. Like having a group for rendering, crowd simulation, animation, fx, fluids, scripting, plugins... and a loooong etc.

There was a generic 3D modelling proposal, (which I believe started life as a pure Blender proposal, but expanded in scope to get enough traction).

It was shut down by the SE team after one month in private beta (i.e. before it even had a chance to prove itself).

It could always be re-proposed... Commented Feb 4, 2013 at 2:55
  • I didn't say it couldn't, and that's kinda what this question is doing. However, given that the SE team have already expressed disapproval of the proposal, it would need strong support to help it see the light. Commented Feb 4, 2013 at 8:07

They didn't express disapproval, the proposal just didn't have enough activity. Which has me worried for this proposal. Commented Feb 4, 2013 at 11:54
  • Those were different times where SE had much less users. Now that SE has more user this proposal might succeed but if it does then lunching a future 3d modeling website is going to be difficult.

  • I can confirm (being the proposer) that the 3D Graphics site did, in fact, start as a pure Blender proposal. After many months of minimal movement (mmmm...) I bit the bullet and expanded the scope. It got the site just enough increased users, to die in beta... :( Good luck to the new site, I'd like to see it happen.

The points made above are good points. I would argue, however, that limiting the scope is useful. Personally, I'll never be a user of Maya or 3DSMax. The scope of my work doesn't justify such an expensive modelling tool. Blender, on the other hand, allows me to pursue 3D modelling as a hobby. Unless another full-featured, free and open-source modelling tool arrives on the scene, blender is likely the only thing I will use. If I saw tips and tricks being discussed on other software, it's value might be considerably diminished. In fact, my support of this proposal was based on the specificity of the proposal.

Opinions like yours did not impede the progress of Stack Overflow, despite the fact that it serves very different programming languages and APIs. Many people ignore vast swathes of SO, and it works out well enough for them. So I don't see why 3D modelling applications would be so different. Unless you're saying that modellers never switch applications. Commented Feb 13, 2013 at 7:58

I'm just saying that if the topic were 3D modelling generally instead of blender, it would not have gained my support. I'm not saying broadening the scope is a bad idea, or that I wouldn't use the 3D modelling forum occasionally. I am saying that my interest in supporting this project is because of its Blender specificity.

Isn't this topic already discussed in this question and in this question?

When talking about modelling only, you should certainly have included Z-Brush as an example. But as far as I can read it from the example questions in this proposal, it is about other stuff too: Materials, texturing, lighting, physics, particles, nodes, ...,game engine, user interface.

So I would assume that your questions means something like "shouldn't this proposal be broadened to include other 3d-Software as well?". If this is the question, I think that 1 provides a lot answers to your question.

However, I think that you have a point, when you think that there are probably too few people on this site and we should do something about that.

I guess you're right in the fact that 3d modelling software differs in terms of materials, texturing, all the other things you mentioned. I know Blender has some game engine stuff going on, but by broadening the scope, you'll definitely draw in more users.

One possible reason not to have “3D Modeling” is because the scope there is quite narrow.

Consider Blender has shading languages (OSL, GLSL), a video editor, scripting API, sculpting, painting system, compositing, motion tracking, game engine... etc.

Perhaps there could be a "3D Content Creation" stack-exchange - but this is also very broad, however it at least is a close analogy to Stack-Overflow being a programming language forum.

I like the idea of a general 3d-package site. A site for only 3d modeling wouldn't be sufficent, as others have answered, because of the possibilities of blender (and other 3d software).

The mechanism of favorite-/ignored-tags on SE sites makes it easy to hide unwanted questions or highlight questions for your preferred tags.

I just want to learn how things are accomplished with Blender 3D not with the other 3D Modeling tools. Mainly due to the fact that it is open-source, free and allows me to write Python plug-ins.
