Proposal: Undergraduate

The academia S.E. doesn't cater for undergraduates :(

by proposer.

I doubt that a new site is really needed for undergraduates, and this site appears to support a smaller audience than some sites. It seems that this is allowed, without turning into a list of undergrad admission questions. Am I incorrect that it is, and can this be proposed on their meta instead of creating a new proposal?

As a mod on the Academia site, I want to emphasize that we're not trying to be "mean" or "exclusive" or anything. The Academia site is geared towards researchers and those doing research. It just so happens that most academic research takes place in the same buildings where undergraduates go to college. However, these two "fields", as you were—undergraduate studies and academic research—are actually very distant. Academic research questions will likely focus on education- and career–related topics, such as:

  • career advice
  • dealing with coursework & working
  • tuition
  • teaching questions
  • TA questions
  • software related to studying

Whereas questions on Academia are much more geared towards research, focusing on topic such as:

  • grant agencies
  • dealing with publishers
  • setting up with and maintaining collaborations
  • cooperating with advisors
  • motivating undergraduates
  • academic career paths
  • academic administrative duties

The only similarity between the two is the university setting, but that's really about it. The community has voted in the past against including undergraduate questions, and considering the above I tend to agree.

Please do not bring undergraduate questions to academia. The Academia FAQ makes it clear that such questions are off-topic. They will be closed, and then deleted. Repeated deletions will earn you the suspension of your question-asking rights.

A proposal for a new site is exactly the way to go.

  • Currently, I am not trying to bring said questions. I am looking for evidence that a request to expand academia to include undergrad questions has been rejected at its meta. I currently don't see evidence of said discussion, so could you give a list showing that this expansion has been proposed at said meta?
