Proposal: Geoscience

Potential members are worried about two issues:

  1. Having their community recognized
  2. Not being overwhelmed with information

The method of differentiating the communities will be utilizing Tags. While tags are not defined, we might suggest an initial set of tags.

You can then watch the page, or follow an RSS feed for tags you are specifically interested in (someone want to get a couple reputation points adding a how to for this?)

Community Tags

  • Geoscience
  • Oceanography
  • Meteorology
  • Climate-Change
  • Environmental-Science

Topic Tags

  • Mineralogy
  • Tectonics
    • Earthquakes
    • Faults
  • Water
  • Geomorphology

Someone with a high reputation(300+) will need to initially create tags. But earning a reputation to be able to do such things is what make the community sustainable.

One small correction — Reputation requirements are greatly reduced when bootstrapping a new community. Anyone can create new tags during the private beta (reputation 1), and the rep requirement is lowered to 150 for the duration of the public beta. The expanded participation during the early stages creates more-than-enough avid users to create tags organically from there on out. 'Flagging' and 'suggested edits' take care of any outliers. • That's great. Thanks for the information. Oct 12 '12 at 15:09
  • I think it's bad to have the site title as a tag, as all of the question should/could be tagged with it which makes the tag rather useless. Is there an alternative for Geoscience?
