Proposal: Italian Language & Usage

I think we are doing fine as far as the number of followers is concerned (although I admit the increase pace has slowed down somewhat), but the problem of getting questions upvoted so as to reach the required number of 40 questions with 10 or more upvotes is still there. Personally, I've tried to move my upvotes around, so as to "influence" other people (if you see that a question already has 9 upvotes you may want to add that final missing vote... ), but the outcome has been dsappointing.

I understand that having the best favoured questions at the top of the list could set a kind of standard for other questions, but at the same time I feel that this fact may provoke the loss of potential upvotes because people may not feel like scrolling the whole list in order to get to those questions which have not been voted yet, or which have received just a few votes.

Does anybody know whether it is possible to create an inverted order for the questions, so as to have then listed according to lack of votes (leaving the ones which were downvoted aside) or according to when they were submitted, putting the most recent at the top?

Or does anybody have a better proposal to try and boost our sample questions?

  • I'm afraid the ordering order is a global cross-site setting, so I don't think there is a way of changing that.

    Abstractly speaking, "95 followers" would be enough to have this proposal in the next phase (95*5=475; 475>40*10), but the reality is different and rough statistical projections say us that the problem is how we can attract at least other 117 followers (95:18::X:40 => X=212; 212-95=117). However you have done, and you are doing, a great work here, and we are grateful to you for your generosity and support. I hope to see this proposal in the next phase, but, alas, it is only a dream today.

  • There are a couple of things I don't understand: there have been two new subscriptions, and yet the questions under score 10 have increased by 2. wth??? Secondly, mod Robert has deleted all the announcements. What was wrong with them? They didn't seem disscussions to me but, indeed, announcements. Would it be wrong to repost at least @Carlo_R. 's one?

  • One more thing: I think we should remove our upvotes from questions that have received downvotes, in order to push forward those that have better chances to be voted.

  • @Lucius. I agree we'd better support those questions which are likely to reach the 10-vote level, but I can see downvotes only when the balance is negative. I cannot tell, for example, if for a question which scores zero this is the result of one upvote and one downvote or else of the fact that nobody has upvoted that question. There's no question I voted which has a negative balance, but that's the only thing I can say about it.

  • @Paola yes, you are right, but probably it is arrived the time to delete some questions: more elevate is the number of questions more elevate is the number of followers to make this proposal in the next phase.

I'm willing to delete those questions of mine which haven't scored anything; I suppose we can delete someone else's questions by voting to close them, but I'm afraid that those who voted them are not regular visitors to the proposal, so that their votes might just go lost instead of being "reinvested" on other questions. And I didn't know that there's a direct connection between the number of questions and the number of people who have to commit to get to the beta phase. Where is this passage explained?

  • @Paola I have just deleted one of my questions which had got zero votes. The problem consists in the fact that, with many questions, the votes tend to disperse more easily. There is no need of explanations on this circumstance: you have only to know the four operations, especially the sum and the division. ...

So, in order to have more probability to make this proposal in the next phase, I suggest you to delete "What's the origin of the idiom 'prendere qualcuno in castagna', which roughly means 'to catch someone red-handed?'” and "We normally say 'l'occhio' as a singular form; is it correct to say 'gl'occhi' in the plural?”, which still have zero votes.

  • @Carlo_R. Done that. In a sense that's very well to delete questions which have never been voted (there are 11 in total), but we should manage to also delete those which have a negative score or one upvote (12 of them). Then all the upvotes for these questions should become available again and could be used on the existing questions. However, there are only 12 questions which have 2 or more upvotes, and we need 21 ten-vote questions to get to the next stage. I hope that, if there are more valid questions, new ones might be upvoted as a mimetic effect.

  • @Midhat. You're right, there are three extra votes which could be placed on other questions. I cannot withdraw my vote on either answer, so I leave it to others. However, let's keep track of such changes because we had better not lose the answers which have reached the target.

    Also If someone has a downvote on a question at 10 or close to 10, I suggest they remove it. The community has already spoken by upvoting that question so many times.

I've just noticed that, if you press the "active" tab instead of the "votes" one at the top of the question list, you get the questions starting from the most recent one, which means that the questions in the top half of the page often have not received any single vote yet.

However, the other tab was in operation as if it were kind of default position, at least from my computer. If this is true for other followers, the problem is still there.

  • From what I understand, the order is not based on the date of creation, but rather on the last action received (votes, comments, edits..). Anyway, the result is quite the same.

    We could add an annoucement inviting people to set the tab to "active" in order to see the most recent questions posted
