I joined Area51 because someone suggested it in a blog. There must have been a link I should have use so that he would get credit referring me. Is there a way I can make it retroactive?

If the blogger provides a link with the 'referrer' id, you can 'unfollow' the proposal (upper left on the proposal page) and re-follow the proposal using blog author's link. If the blogger did not use a referrer id, there is no function to associate your referral to his account after the fact.
