Proposal: Genealogy & Family History

Let's get behind this initiative and support a beta site.

According to yesterday's issue of Bloomberg's Business Week, "... genealogy ranks second only to porn as the most searched topic online."

Are we really the second hottest topic on the net? We are surely popular, and though I believe we rank, I wouldn't place us that high. Then again, porn doesn't rank so high for me either.

Dick Eastman had a nice take on it.

Let's rally and encourage others to join the "in" crowd. --GeneJ

The other interesting statistic from that article is that an estimated 84 million people from around the world spend anywhere from $1,000 to $18,000 a year in search of their ancestors.

  • Just a thought, but is it possible to email them and let them know there's a new site about to launch? Getting someone to write about the site would be a great way to build more interest and excitement.

  • @jmort253 Bloomberg? Probably not practical. As far as as bloggers though, Dick Eastman did an article about the restart, as did DearMyrtle, GeneaMusings (Randy Seaver), Geniaus (Jill Ball), Behold (lkessler) and others. It's not that we can't reach far more genealogists and family historians. Rather, the commitment phase isn't something that folks new to StackExchange really rally 'round in excitement. That all changes when we reach beta. What am I missing?

  • Sounds like you covered everything @GeneJ, I'm thinking that this site, when it launches, is going to be pretty popular! I'd say we're looking at a beta launch in maybe 30 days tops?
