Proposal: Genealogy & Family History

The genealogy proposal is now in 'commitment' and needs more committers. How best should we get the word out?

Could someone write up a blurb that I (and others) can send to others? It should contain what we are trying to do, why this would be good for the genealogical community and what they should do to support us?

I am a member of several genealogical/historical societies, and I would send this to their mailing lists. I'm sure there are better writers than me, and this collective body would come up with something better to send than what I'd say. And then others could send to their respective groups as well.

I'm sure this can be improved upon, but consider this as a starting point:

There's a new site, "Genealogy & Family History," coming to StackExchange. At least we hope so. Your show of support can help qualify the proposal and allow a community beta site to become functional.

If you are a StackExchange user, then you know the array of related disciplines already represented on the platform or in beta: History, Libraries and Information Science, Writers, to name a few. There are still other related proposals, like digital preservation that we hope will come online soon.

Once operational, the site will be fully developed by the community and for the community.

It's easy to support the proposed Genealogy & Family History site. Just …. [add your closing and include a referral link]

  • That's good, GeneJ, but at this point, we probably shouldn't emphasize the "hurdle" to get into beta, because (I'm hoping) by the time the message makes its way around, we may already be in beta.

  • None-the-less, this is a tricky time. We need to get the 200 committers (100 with 100+), but we also need to look ahead to doing the major advertising during the Public Beta, which will be easier because we'll have an actual Q&A site that the people can join in on.

  • ... also, once we go Beta, there will be a different site where the Q&A is. Probably: genealogy.stackexchange.com but I can't say for sure.
