I'm interested in a more concrete interpretation of the Area51 questions per day stats for Project Management SE, specifically in regards to how closed questions affect those metrics.

Currently, it says PMSE receives 2.4 questions per day.

Does this include closed questions? My interpretation of our community is that many members feel pressured to not close questions because they are fearful of that statistic dropping.

While I know there is more to a healthy site than just this one metric, I realize it's a concern many have, and I'd like to be able to answer this question in a scheduled chat with the PMSE community so that I can dispel these fears, if possible, and encourage our community to focus more on quality over quantity.

Assuming users continue posting questions at the same rate, will the "questions per day" metric drop if more questions are closed?

It'd be a real shame if this went a year unanswered so...

No, the stats don't exclude closed questions. Obviously if you're closing enough questions for this to matter that's somewhat concerning, but still: you should focus on doing what's right for the site and its membership, not the number.

  • What about percent answered vs. closing questions? Closing prevents answering, right? Do closed questions also count against percent answered if they're closed before receiving an answer? I assume answer ratio will follow percent answered either way, so if so, that's two criteria statistics as the price of one... Jan 25, 2014 at 9:04
