Proposal: Chess

We should look at, "what is the right and sensible thing to do" instead of "will this survive separately".
Chess is radically different from other board game, definitely different from card games, there is no LUCK factor involved in chess (Unless of course your opponent makes a mistake).
It's a game where only pure intelligence is required, nothing physical.
Of course you have to think and remember and judge people etc in cards. But chess and cards is even more different than apples and oranges.

Ask yourself these questions.
How many people have heard of Garry Kasparov or Bobby Fischer?
Can you name any reigning or former card game champion?

Check the sports column in the newspaper for references to cards?
Check the sports column in the newspaper for references to chess matches?

Do you know any school which has cards in their curriculum?
Did you know that chess is taught in public schools as a part of the curriculum in 30+ countries including Russia, Iceland, Venezuela etc and some states in India.

Having said this, I personally love playing cards (Definitely played more card game rounds than chess) and usually play a local (Kerala, India) game called twenty eight, the only questions I may have on it is regarding the rules, once that is clear there is no scope for further questions. In chess we can have a mathematically insane number of board positions hence can have that many questions/analysis options.

Any more arguments in favor or against?

  • Funny that you say that chess appears in newspapers and card games don't. I'm used to seeing chess and bridge alongside each other in newspapers.

There is no luck factor in Checkers. Chess is only special because of its history and popularity. It has no real new knowledge that's being generated either. I'd argue that MtG is more worthy of its own site than Chess, and that proposal was canned recently.

I personally don't think we need another site for chess, when we already have boardgames.SE and a perfectly good tagging system (note: I am the top user in chess on the boardgame SE).

However, I also don't believe we need a separate site for poker, or two essentially identical sites for christianity, or nine separate sites (123456789) for various programming topics. And they seem to be doing fine - so maybe a chess site would work after all :)

    Mathematica isn't just programming, which is why it has its own site now. Also, looking at the stats, I dispute that Poker.SE is "doing fine".

How about: is boardgames.SE the best alternative for potential users of chess.SE? No, most of them will simply go to the chess communities that already exist and cater to their needs directly. The users of chess.SE (if it ever comes into existence) should be the ones to determine the need, and we will find out in beta.

Agreed. Chess is such an intricate and complex game by itself, that to discuss all of its separate aspects, a new site would be better, and prevent boardgames.stackexchange.com from being weighed down with overly numerous chess-related questions.

    People who don't want to look at chess questions can filter by tag. I didn't feel that the preponderance of C# and Java questions made SO less useful to me as a Mathematica user: I could just ignore them. Rather, it was the incessant errant closing of on-topic Mathematica questions, and the fact that many Mathematica questions are off-topic on SO that made us want a new site.
