Is it possible to stop followers from using the announcement section in proposals (at least in the initial stages)

I've noticed that @RobertCartaino is running around asking people not to post announcments. This is surely a complete drain on his time (I would be better if he could help us unite our communities as the number of separatist proposals grows on a daily basis).

To save Robert the bother can we restrict announcments to be the sole preserve of admins and the originator of the proposal as these are the first things that a new user sees. It would also be useful for proposal deputies to be appointed to act on behalf of the originator should they require.

  • down votes on meta typically indicate a disagreement or disapproval of the idea.

Update: This is now a moderator-only feature.

This has been suggested and — for reasons I cannot recall — it was decided NOT to restrict the announcements to admins and the original author.

For what it's worth, rigorous enforcement has reduced the problem to manageable levels. Some announcement-discussion remain for historical reasons but they're not as numerous as they used to be.

Area 51 is due for a major redesign which will being in earnest in 2012. A next-generation Area 51 will provide much more interactivity and clearer communication channels to unite communities and a more robust development cycle to address these scope and expertise concerns. I have no immediate details to report. This is going to be a major design project, but stay tuned.

  • So...Area 52? And interactivity and clearer communication channels to unite communities and a more robust development cycle to address these scope and expertise concerns sounds like either marketing speak (which it probably is)...or doublespeak.

  • thanks Robert ... I really hope this makes a difference, Stack Exchange is amazing yet understanably unwieldy. Your continued efforts do not go unappreciated. Have a great holiday, I look forward to the changes in 2012 ;)

  • @TinyTom: It's a list of issues that need to be fixed without specifying any solutions -- I.e. Easier to use + more flexible definition process + more communications between users and proposals + does site have the right people to launch + increase engagement leading up to launch... among others issues. • @RobertCartaino - I see that all announcements have been stripped from most proposals (with a notable exception of Repurpose Hacking *8') and the link to add an announcement has been removed (even for my own proposal). Does this mark a permanent (and welcome from my point of view) change to Area 51?

  • @MarkBooth The 'add announcement' link is now a moderator-only function. The interface is much the same as it always was. If there are no announcements, that region is blank. I haven't gone out my way to remove announcements everywhere, but I've been sort of cleaning up as I move through the proposals. Mar 1, 2013 at 14:46
  • That makes sense, thanks for the clarification Robert.
