Proposal: Movies

I was hoping there would be a discussion on the symbolism of [movie].

It would be interesting to hear different viewpoints on how people interpret such and such movie.

If you're going to downvote, at least leave a reason that you don't think this is an interesting topic for discussion.

Ex: I watched Forrest Gump in my high school psychology class and had to write down the different symbols I saw throughout the movie and what I thought they represented.

  • An essay on the symbols an individual saw in a movie, and what they represent, would not make for good SE material. A question on "What did the writer of X movie intend by Y symbol?" might make for a good question.

  • Point taken. I wasn't sure how to word the question, but it is still interesting to me.

I personally would have thought that it would be perfectly ok to discuss symbolism in movies, e.g. 'what does the feather in Forrest Gump's opening sequence represent'.

However I think that you've been downvoted (not by me), because either:

  1. The definition phase of setting the scope of this discussion zone has been finished. Comments are now more about whether it should be merged with other groups etc.

  2. Or, the question/answer format of SE generally suits more factual and less discussion based questions (but of course you do find that sort of 'opinion' question here too).

I have some sympathy with the latter point, particularly on the more technical SE forums, but surely symbolism in movies is an important factor, so should be permitted.

  • What's funny is that I was thinking of the feather when I decided on asking the discussion question. :)
