Proposal: Game of Go

We already had several discussions on merging game-of-go and similar proposals into boardgames.SE.

Those who opposed the merger mainly argued that a go player sees himself as a go player, and not as a boardgame player that happens to play go. So they want a separate site to identify with.

On the other hand there are activity concerns. boardgames.SE isn't overly active, and I assume game-of-go won't be super active either.

The new virtual subsite feature seems ideal to address both of these concerns at the same time. Go players get their own site with separate reputation to identify with, and boardgame.SE gets the activity.

One thing that's still required in both cases are go specific markup extensions.

A similar treatment would be a appropriate for other game specific proposals with distinct communities such as Chess and Poker.

  • How does that work? There's still a subdomain for GO but behind the scene it's just using tags on BoargamesSE?

  • I saw that but I don't find it very clear. Anyway, as long as we have a place (visually) outside gameboardSE, with a subdomain, independent reputation and independent tags, I don't see the difference for the users. If that can help both sites get more visits then why not.

  • I've read a bit more on meta.SO, and the subsite feature seems to be so bad in its current implementation that we're better off with a separate site for now.

  • Yes, the current feature doesn't seem to be what I want. What I want is a way to form sub communities which are still part of a larger community. The current feature goes 90% of the way to what I want.

To address your concerns about being overly active, you'd be surprised just how passionate the English-speaking Go community is. For instance, take a look at http://lifein19x19.com/forum, specifically the "Improve Your Game" subsection, which is the one that maps most directly to the Stack Exchange model.

The community has a Q&A model already quite well-established, but they're suffering under the yoke of phpBB. They yearn to be liberated! ;)

  • For most threads there the classic thread model works better than the Q&A model. Not sure if the remaining questions are enough.

    The stuff in "Game Analysis" and "Study Group" is what I think is best on SE. I agree that all the general discussion forums are fine as-is. I really think SE can change the way people analyze specific positions though. It's definitely worth a shot.

Doing a bit more research it seems like the current implementation is too weak to lead to a nice experience:

  • The reputation/badges shown next to each post correspond to the master site
  • The user profile includes all master site stuff, including listing questions&answers that are unrelated to the subsite

Unfortunately these issues are "by-design", so they're unlikely to change any time soon.
