Currently, the arts and crafts stack specifically forbids questions regarding "non tangible" art, and there doesn't seem to be a place in any of the technology related stacks relating to AI art.

Would it be more productive to approach the arts and crafts stack with a motion to expand the scope of the existing stack to be more inclusive (and has this been tried before), or to move forward with the creation of a new stack.

You might be interested in GenAI Stack Exchange. This site was phased into the public beta stage the last week. It hasn't an Area 51 site proposal as it follows a different process that was explained in Meta Stack Exchange.

At this time the key attributes of GenAI SE are still open to discussion. By key attributes I mean:

  • Site name
  • Site scope
  • Tags
  • Tour
  • Help content like help center homepage, how to ask a good question, on-topi/off-topic

As it's following a different process than Area 51 site proposals, the journey is a bit bumpy.

I suggest you post one question about using GenAI tools to create AI Art, and then go from there based on the community feedback. An alternative is to go directly to GenAI Meta to look around and if you don't find anything about AI Art questions, ask yourself if AI art is on-topic.

Is there any appetite for a Stack based on xxx?

As users of A51, we simply can not tell. What matters is not whether the people on Stack Exchange want a Stack for a certain topic. What matters is whether the people invested in the topic want to create a Stack.

Great! Ask them if they are interested in creating a Stack. The people on here are not your target audience because even if we find such a Stack interesting in theory, we lack the expertise or commitment to make it work (and those on here that have both are also part of other communities where they can be reached).

Note that the community also needs to be large enough to support a proposal.

  • OK, if I try to get a stack will I be duplicating? May 16 at 14:11
  • I don't know. There appears to be some overlap with existing sites like ai.SE. Crafts.SE may allow some questions about AI art. Webapps.SE has a few questions about chatGPT, so questions about, say, Midjourney would not be out of the question. Since I am not a regular on these stacks, I would urge you to check for yourself if your questions have a place there.

  • Craft.SE specifically forbids questions about AI art unless it involves using an AI as part of the process to produce a tangible product. AI.SE doesn't have much patience for the artistic side, as opposed to the technical side. May 16 at 16:46
