Proposal: 3D Graphics, Modeling & Applications

This site is nearly ready to launch, but before that happens we need a short, clear name for it. Site naming is always a balancing act between finding something suitably descriptive, and choosing something short enough to look good on the site, on swag, etc.

I'll post a few of the suggestions that have come up here as answers, feel free to add your own. The sooner we get the URL and name hashed out, the sooner the private beta will be launched.

3D Graphics

If a short name is preferred, this still covers all activities.

"3D Graphics" on Wikipedia is an overview page discussing all the different parts of the topic.

Ask 3D

A nice short name, although possibly too short?

  • I think this one has the unique (of the available options) attribute of being distinct and easy to use in a sentence. As in: "I was reading a post over on Ask3d, and learned that..." Though I suppose 3DG would be a decent abbreviation of my other favorite. In short, I guess it's catchy.

3DQA

Trying to think of short, catchy names that would be unique. I think CGTalk, Eat3D, etc are easy to remember for these reasons. While this one also implies the unique twist that being a SE site will bring to things.

This already has a consensus for renaming, but could also be considered long.

Doesn't come off as a list -- I think we can assume that by covering the activities, we also cover the tools for doing them.

3D Graphics Craftsmanship

Short, inclusive, and descriptive.

As an alternate, maybe 3D Graphics Artistry, though I think that feels less inclusive of the tooling and such.

The name of this proposal, so obviously worth considering, but strikes me as too much of a list to sound good.

  • The 'Applications' part wasn't requested by anyone committed to the proposal, though adding animation to the title has been.
