discourse forum engine (forum.cardano.org based on that) has great features to handle questions efficiently, just like in stackExchange:

  • able to mark answers as solutions
  • hint similar questions to avoid duplicate
  • subtopics
  • following/notifications
  • reputations
  • moderation by members
  • plugins

but also allows to have just discussions, news, announcements etc. So my question is what features stackExchange has that discourse does not, and because of that the community needs a new Q&A site.

Proposal: Cardano

Great points, but the biggest challenge at the moment is how to drive traffic here to get some genuine questions to be answered. There is nothing wrong with having overlapping places to get answers (especially in the early stages). Over time, various platforms will have distinct subcultures that gravitate towards them. e.g. Devs to here, governance to discord, newbies everywhere :-)

  • Agreed. There is a subreddit for developers but I much prefer the UI of stackoverflow for developer topics.

  • I don't think it will be difficult to drive traffic here. StackExchange is a highly trafficked website that has a great reputation across a wide variety of topics. In fact, many users might be surprised to learn that the Cardano StackExchange has only now reached enough commitments to move out of the exploratory phase.

Stack Exchange questions / answers will rise in search engine rankings faster than threads on forum.cardano.org because the stack exchange network is large and contains a lot of cross links.

So, even if forum.cardano.org has all the same features, having a stack exchange site might still be good for "popularity" effects.
