I see fuzzy boundaries between the various categories. Anyone doing 3D must necessarily work in 2D at least for textures. One can't do much in animation without working in 3D generally. Suggesting limitations to 3D in the title might not be wise. While there's a lot to animiation, I don't see it standing alone as its own SO style site. Too many participants have expertise overlapping the various areas and won't want to be logging on to several sites every day. Lump it all together and use tags.

Sorry, I think the consensus is to stay 3D.

  • Yep, been discussed before and the general opinion is to keep it 3D focused. Questions about 2D textures for 3D models would probably still be on-topic. (But questions that are too photoshop-centric would likely be directed towards existing sites that have that expertise/interest, where they would get better answers.) Oct 25, 2011 at 14:29

Also, Animation is already part of the proposal, but I agree it makes sense to have it in the title to make that clearer. Having "3D Graphics, Modelling and Animation" would be better than the current one. Oct 25, 2011 at 14:30
  • I think it's a good idea to add Animation the title, though I agree about the points regarding 3D. A couple of people have raised the point about Animation, but I believe the title is locked until beta or post-beta. It is included in the proposal, and one of the top questions ("What is rigging?") is exclusively about Animation. Oct 25, 2011 at 16:27
  • Nah, pretty sure the mods can change the title at any time. In fact, Dori says exactly that. Oct 25, 2011 at 17:11
  • I've just added the proposal-name and change-request tags - hopefully this will result in moderator attention/action, since there seems to be agreement on the adding animation part of this question. Oct 27, 2011 at 22:13

The consensus is to stay 3D, so the "computer graphics" part of the change is not a good idea.

The proposal does already include Animation - and, as this is likely to be a significant portion of the questions, it definitely makes sense to have this in the title.

The current "Applications" part of the title is redundant - none of the other proposals, beta sites, nor launched sites contain the word (despite the use of applications relevant to their subject being a major part of it).

Taking all this into account, a sensible rename would be:

3D Graphics, Modelling and Animation

  • Fine by me, if any moderator wants to do it (I no longer have the power, alas :(
