I am looking for a site which would cover a wide range of practical questions and answers about doing business. I am thinking of topics such as:

  • design, marketing, pricing, sales
  • manufacturing, warehousing, materials handling
  • purchasing, order taking, shipping/receiving, billing, collections
  • regulations (OSHA, USDA, health depts, EPA, FDA, DOT, ...)
  • accounting, bookkeeping, financial reporting, taxes
  • equipment, fixtures, utilities, and supplies

Is there an existing site or a proposed site which covers business?

Well, there's OnStartups, which is in beta.

OnStartups is scoped narrowly to startups.

There are a few possible ones:

  • OnStartups - Beta Q&A site for entrepreneurs looking to start a new business, or running a new business, and looking for help
  • Business Intelligence - Proposed Q&A site for business intelligence practitioners - people involved in data warehouse and business intelligence system implementation, reporting and data analysis.
  • Business Analysis - Proposed Q&A site for professional Business Analysts.
  • Professional Matters - Proposed Q&A site for people in a workplace interested in discussion that relates to general office or business without a specific tie to any professional field.

  • In my own mind I ruled those out: OnStartups because questions would have to be specific to getting a new business started.

  • @MetaEd Perhaps they might be able to still help with questions about it. You should ask in their chat, or examine the sites FAQ Oct 19, 2011 at 22:02
  • In my own mind I ruled those out: OnStartups because questions would have to be specific to getting a new business started; Business Intelligence because it's specific to business intelligence systems; Business Analysis because it's specific to analyzing a business; Professional Matters based on the example questions which were all personnel/human resources issues.

  • Tried that, but the FAQ for OnStartups is consistent with the description. It limits the scope to new businesses. Business Intelligence, Business Analysis, and Professional Matters do not seem to have FAQs, perhaps because they aren't live.

  • @MetaEd They are not live.. just suggestions of where you could contribute. Oct 19, 2011 at 22:54

Would a proposal like this be more in line with what you suggest? http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/107383/organisational-improvement

It's another good site idea but again it's narrow in scope. I wouldn't be able to ask many practical questions about business operation. Phone systems, material handling, freight regulations, taxes, ... I don't get why there are so many business related proposals that are narrowly scoped. Why not start with business Q&A and then split off where necessary?

  • @MetaEd I fully agree we need a general Business site, but I think running a business and understanding businesses are two different things. What I personally wanted is a site that's parallel to Bloomberg/CNBC
