Proposal: Drones and Model Aviation

I noticed that 17 new users (all with only 51 total points, so all brand new users) followed this proposal within 1 hour:

That is truly exceptional and as someone currently working very hard to try to attract enough activity in my own Area 51 proposal for materials modeling, I wonder if you might be able to share with us the advertisement you used which was so successful at attracting so many people to sign up within just one hour!

Ah, yes. That must look highly suspicious from the outside. I've been working with a YouTuber (Joshua Bardwell, aka. The FPV Know-It-All) who makes videos about drones and FPV flight on his channel (among other very interesting things) to promote this proposal.

Today was the first of a few announcements we agreed to put up on his channel. Tonight, it came in the form of a mention during one of his livestreams. No black magic here. :)

I see. Those youtubers can be extremely powerful! I didn't find the activity to be "suspicious" I was just impressed and wondering what we can learn from you. We found it very easy to reach the 60 minimum followers requirement, but we for some reason can't get people to use their 5 upvotes! Dec 10, 2019 at 3:16

Yeah, I found the same problems when I tried posting on Reddit about this proposal. I got a good number of people to follow, but few voted or added questions of their own. :( I suspect it's to do with the many hoops Area51 forces them to pass to participate.

@ipconfig - I joined from reddit, but as a newbie to this, I didn't initially realise that I should do more than just follow. Dec 10, 2019 at 9:16
  • Oh, interesting. I didn't consider that...

  • @ifconfig: Out of curiosity, were you also the one that launched the Betaflight proposal a few months ago? Dec 11, 2019 at 14:38

No, that wasn't me. I tried to help out, but it was a futile attempt, in my opinion.

I saw that Joshua Bardwell just referred 26 new committers !!!!!! Can you send me the video or ad that he used? I want to see how he's able to attract so many people within such a short time frame.... I cannot get 26 users in 1 day on my Materials Modeling proposal. Jan 8, 2020 at 1:12
  • @user1271772 Yea, he did. I can't find the exact video to credit the boost to, but the message he's been pushing is the same as the one I posted in my answer here. I'm hoping to get another bump of a similar size when he posts a regular video on his channel this coming Satruday.

  • @ifconfig: The boost of 26 new committers was only yesterday so it must have been a recent video. If you don't know which video it was, how about for the first one you sent me, at what time does he advertise the stack exchange proposal? Jan 8, 2020 at 8:47

@user1271772 In that video, he says about the proposal at the 27th minute. This link will go to the exact location where he starts talking about it.

About to be a lot more coming. Joshua Bardwell just uploaded a dedicated video just about this and that's why I'm here lol. His channel is 99% quadcopter related so a decent amount of his subscribers should commit. Even if 1/4 of his subs commit, that's around 35,000 new commits. It would be crazy if that amount did in 1 day haha.

Yeah, the thing is I'm pretty sure very few of them have >200 reputation... I'm starting to wonder if I should reach out to @RobertCartaino or someone to ask if a massive number of low-rep users could supplant some high-rep ones.

  • I committed after seeing @JoshuaBardwell's video as well. He has quite the following in the Drone/FPV community, and produces high quality content. Jan 19, 2020 at 0:22
