Proposal: Operations Research

When OR.SE enters private beta, will MathJax be enabled from the start? I know that in 2014, there was some debate about whether this should happen from the start, or whether it should be implemented if and when it became evident that it was needed. I'm not sure whether there have been any developments since then.

I think MathJax should be installed from the get-go for OR.SE. Many, if not most, OR questions will involve math, and having MathJax in place from the start will help enable high-quality questions and answers from the very start.

Just to provide some concrete examples, here are some OR-related questions that have been asked on math.SE in the last few days that make good use of MathJax:

  • Save your question until the site is actually launched. I can appreciate your enthusiasm to get started on the administration of this site, but Area 51 Discussions are for questions about the proposal or proposal process — so it's better to save administrative issues for folks who will be actively using the site once it is launched. I’m confused - does the beta site not fall under the proposal process? (I’m with Larry that this will be a very important feature whenever folks are supposed to start asking questions)

I think beta counts as "launch" and, for the purposes of @RobertCartaino's comment that Area 51 is for questions about the proposal, he means pre-launch? May 8, 2019 at 22:27

I think the closure of this question is incorrect. May 9, 2019 at 13:32
  • @RobertCartaino I personally disagree that this question is off-topic, and believe it should be reopened. Just giving you my thoughts.

  • @MrPie What you risk is a lot of Area 51 regulars streaming in here and deciding FOR you what OR SE needs or doesn't. Maybe they decide you don't need it. The Operations Research community will come together soon enough on their new site. We prefer not to let random 3rd parties meddle in how another site should operate. May 17, 2019 at 0:48
  • @RobertCartaino what do you mean? They are not deciding for me; just because they propose something, does not mean I am going to agree with it. It just so happens that I agree with what Larry says, and I think it makes a lot of sense, thus the chances of installing Mathjax is high. If he decides otherwise, we can discuss about it, right? After all, this is the discussion zone. I think closing the question is actually silly, in my opinion (no disrespect).

  • @MrPie Yes... but we can discuss it with the community who are actually using the site once it launches. This is not the place to have those conversations. May 17, 2019 at 1:03
  • @RobertCartaino well, either way, how can we allow that if this question is closed? Clearly if someone is not interested in using OR.SE, they wouldn't click on this question; and if they did, they wouldn't participate in the discussion anyway.

@MrPie That is 100% incorrect. The vast majority of folks reading through these forums are Area 51 regulars looking for new projects and chiming in on whatever is going on. We have launched hundreds of these sites, and have never had a problem getting a community together talking about this stuff on their own, dedicated meta support site... once it actually launches. • @RobertCartaino Wait... really? Well, since you are the moderator, I believe you. My apologies, then.
