When I asked a question about the programming language "Simplefunge" on StackOverflow, it received 15 views and no answers, even when I put a bounty on it.

Then, it struck me that Stack Overflow may only be about practical programming languages, as there is only one tag about an esoteric programming language (BrainF) and even that is about programming an interpreter about it, and/or asking "Is this even possible?".

So would a proposal about esoteric programming languages not be a duplicate of StackOverflow?

My guess is that it would not be closed as a duplicate, for a couple of reasons:

  • There are sites like Raspberry Pi where all the questions could have been asked on other sites, but there's a site just for the Raspberry Pi, so this wouldn't be an outlier
  • Most users on Stack Overflow aren't interested in esoteric languages, and questions about them get drowned out in a ton of other questions about normal languages
  • Esoteric languages are different enough from most programming languages that they seem worthy of their own site

The thing I'm concerned about is where you can find enough users willing to start a website about esoteric languages. Esoteric languages aren't very popular, and I don't often run into anyone who's interested in esoteric languages. If you can find enough people willing to participate, I think it will do well and not get closed.

  • Okay! Most people at PPCG are interested in esoteric programming languages. I'll see if I can get them to help me with my proposal

  • Actually, this has been closed a duplicate before, I asked over there. Because of this, I have to unaccept your answer.
