Specifically, I am wondering if there is a stackexchange site where marketers working in social media marketing can go for information and where they can build an online reputation for their knowledge and expertise in the field of social media?

If not, can anyone provide insight into why there have been no attempts or why they've failed?

I believe you're looking for Building Social Networks:

Proposed Q&A site for social networking experts to ask and answer questions about how to build social networks. It's also about how to train others on using social networks to build a community, spread a message, or market a product, using Social Networking tools.

  • You posted an question there discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/1724/… which suggests a very different focus from a place where social media professionals can post questions and answers related to social media marketing. Maybe the Marketing site would encompass social media marketing?
