So I know this question exists. I think I may even be one of many who's asked a duplicate of it (I don't really remember if I did, but I'm pretty sure I did, so sorry for that) however this is not a duplicate of that question.

So this morning my rep was in the 700s. Now it's been slashed to 460 (presumably because a proposal was closed). Now I don't really remember every single proposal I've followed, and I have no clue which one apparently contributed to almost half my rep. However, with this massive cut comes massive loss of privileges. This is annoying to say the least. So could we change the method by which this happens? Here are some ideas I have:

  1. Rep loss caps: Set a maximum reputation loss at 10% of the total reputation or a set reputation cap at 250. This reduces loss of privileges and loss of self esteem.
  2. Rep loss warnings: Actually tell people what proposal was closed, and why it was closed. I have no idea (I mean if I thought hard enough about it I probably would but...) what proposal was closed that caused my massive rep drop. Knowing this would be nice and possibly help me be more motivated to take an active role in the proposal.
  3. Warnings: Sending out a warning that X amount of rep my be lost in Y days because proposal Z is about to be closed. This would motivate users to be more active in communities that might die.
  4. Privilege keeping: Set a rep max, that is the maximum rep you've attained, and then use that in calculations of privileges. This prevents loss of privileges when a proposal is closed but doesn't allow users to just gain points willy nilly for questions on proposals that don't make it to the next step. (However, a conceivable downside to this would be downvotes don't have an affect on privileges which could be fixed by allowing downvotes to change the rep max, but not allowing proposal closures to, but at that point the system might get too convoluted)

These are just ideas that I have to fix this problem, but there are probably better ones out there and if anyone has other ideas I'm open to them.

I feel your pain, in previous times I have lost 1000+ rep overnight. But there are more important and easier things like Roberts circuit breaker and Notifications for closed proposals that are not getting dev resources. Your idea is moderately complex and only impacts a few devout Area51 followers, so it is unlikely to gain dev resources. Mar 18, 2018 at 13:22
