I have been playing a particular MUD since 2003, have logged over 15k hours doing so, and have been playing with the idea of building my own. The only issue is that there is limited information to be found on the creation and design of MUD programs.

For those unfamiliar with what a MUD is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUD has more information on it. They are basically text-based RPG games. There is also a MUDConnect site with hundreds of different RPG's you can connect to and play.

There are some sites that provide sections of open sourced code but much of the building is done at the designer's discretion.

OLC seems to be the method of choice for creation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_creation) but again, variations are limitless.

And then there's suggestions on how to organize the information, coding in objects/mobs/rooms/exits/etc. and actions associated to them.

So with so many factors that are specific to this niche topic, is there a location already in the Stack community that exists for these kinds of questions, or should there be a page specific for it?

Is there enough interest in something like this (or even enough people who know about MUDs to begin with)?

  • Have you tried looking for "game" in the site drop-down? If it involves playing the game, it's covered there. If it involves making digital games, it's there. If it involves writing, there's at least two sites for that, and programming has about half a dozen sites devoted to it. None of the factors you mention are specific to the "niche topic" of MUDs.

  • Without being so cryptic, @Nij means the Stack Exchange list of sites where you will find Arqade, Game Development, Writing, and World Building. Mar 17, 2018 at 0:31
  • You left out the Role-Playing Game Stack. I've searched MUD in that particular exchange and found 164 references to mud, of which 154 had to do with wet earth. 15 results in Stack Exchange for diku, of which only 2 were awarded answers and 1 was down voted. As a Text Based game, you're not going to find any help in Arcade, although there are 5 identical questions on what the most active MUD is, one about the term "Toon" and another about clans, and then one about clients. Overall there is a decided lack of any pertinent information on building MUDs, which is what I'm asking for.

  • Well, the reason there are no questions about MUDs is that people don't ask them, so there's obviously little-to-zero audience for it.
