I wanted to change my profile image to the one that I use on the other sites of SE network.

So, I went to my profile, clicked on edit, then Change Picture under the image. This directed me to another site: https://en.gravatar.com

Can I not change my profile image in Area51?

Moreover, I see that when I make changes to the About Me section in other network sites, they're saved across all sites in the SE network except this. Why?

I have also seen that if I have a reputation of 180, when I post example questions or post a new site, the reputation is shown as 996 or something. Why?

When I get votes in questions posted here in Area51 Discussions, there is also no reputation change most of the time. Why?

  • To your last question: I'm not sure, but isn't Discussions a Meta site? On Meta sites you normally don't earn or lose reputation - this is true all over the Stack Exchange Network (except for Meta Stack Exchange)

  • One thing: is Area51 discussions it's meta part? There us a separate tag for area51-meta, so I don't think it's a meta site in any way. Aug 12, 2017 at 16:35

As far as I understand it, from the technical side Area 51 Discussions is a Meta site (you don't earn rep, it's attached to another site (Area 51 main)). From the content side, you discuss both Area 51 itself and proposals, so it's (as you said) only "half a Meta site".

  • OK. I will take that as an acceptable answer to the last question. Aug 12, 2017 at 17:32
  • I researched a little and wrote a complete answer.

Most of this is probably caused by the fact that Area 51 is running an older version of the software (the "engine") than all the other network sites (see also this question asking for a mobile version of Area 51). Several times the integration with normal Stack Exchange procedures seems a bit problematic, which might also be true in your case.

Using a custom avatar

Uploading a custom avatar is a feature that was introduced January 2013. As stated in this answer, the change hasn't made it into the older Area 51 engine. Therefore you can only use Gravatar on this site.

Updating your "About me" section

Sadly, I have nothing to quote here, but I suspect this doesn't work for the same reason as all the other things that don't work on this site.

Weird reputation change

This is indeed strange. You could take some screenshots and then post a bug report either here or on Meta Stack Exchange.

No reputation change

As stated in the comments this is due to the technical nature of the Area 51 Discussion site: It is, technically, a meta site (see this question on downvoting for reference). On meta sites, you generally don't earn or lose reputation (the only exception is Meta Stack Exchange, and this is due to the fact that Meta Stack Exchange is technically a main site).

As OP has stated in his comment, semantically this is half a meta site for Area 51 and half a meta site for proposals (therefore there is the seperate tag - on other meta sites, this is not needed).

  • I'll take that as a good answer. Aug 12, 2017 at 18:28
  • See if your reputation changes. Otherwise report to Meta SE. I'll support. Aug 12, 2017 at 18:28
  • As expected, my reputation hasn't changed. I'm however not convinced to take it to Meta.SE - I think this is a feature.

  • @RobertCartaino would you like to add something to this answer? I have accepted the answer, but I wanted to know from you why hasn't been the Area51 systems been updated. Aug 12, 2017 at 18:48
  • @WrichikBasuIndian Not sure if pinging him works (he hasn't participated in this discussion yet). You could either wait for him to have a look at the question (if he decides to do so) or try to ask him somwhere in chat.

This answer is correct about the avatar, the "about me", and the reputation changes on Area 51 Discuss. As far as weird reputation changes go, Area 51 usually shows your combined network reputation rather than just your A51 reputation alone.

  • @AdamLear: I don't think that's true, because I currently see my reputation displayed as "186" :P
