I understand that proposals are deleted after a period of inactivity. My impression is that this allows someone else to come along with a new take on a similar idea that may work. But what about a situation where a proposal is deleted and the same user immediately creates an identical proposal? That doesn't strike me as very productive, but I haven't been able to find any statement on how that is handled.

  • Can you expand on the issue? Maybe give an example? Mar 24, 2017 at 13:46
  • The example that brought it to mind is the newest MATLAB proposal. It was deleted due to the 1 year deadline, then a seemingly identical proposal was immediately created by the same user. This is at least the fourth MATLAB proposal, although I don't know if previous versions were also done by the same person. Mar 24, 2017 at 19:21
  • The link in my answer, answers your question, OP is encouraged to restart the proposal. Mar 24, 2017 at 23:42

If you think you can create a similar proposal with the same general audience, that will do better, there is nothing stopping you from doing so. It is not unusual for several similar proposals to be moving forward on area51 at the same time.

If the proposal has timed out at a 12 month window etiquette generally allows the original proposer to propose the relaunch. I have personally occasionally proposed a relaunch near a 12 month timeout that was slightly different then the original. Proposal activity and discussion give clues as to what the most appropriate action might be.

In any case, anyone can propose anything. If you have a better idea, go for it.

  • I think that TheBlackCat was talking about when a proposal doesn't meet the Minimum requirements and is deleted, and then immediately recreates the proposal.

  • @Mithrandir every proposal that gets closed does not meet some minimum requirement, so I am not sure where you are going with that. But regardless, I don't see where your comment or this question are trying to go. If you want to make a proposal make one. Unless you want to create an exact duplicate with the same name and scope as a previous proposal, nothing is stopping you. If you do want create an exact duplicate, what makes one member other then the OP more appropriate then any other member of the community? Mar 24, 2017 at 11:23
  • I mean that I think that they're talking about how some people create proposals that get deleted after 3 days and then repropose the exact same thing. I'm not trying to do anything here, just explain how I understood the question...

  • Your link works for a second try. But what about a third or fourth? Is there a certain point where it becomes clear that the support just isn't there? Mar 26, 2017 at 18:41
  • Not really. Take for example the current Weapons Proposal several years ago it failed a beta launch but similar or identical proposals are consistently re-proposed. Sometimes there are 2 or 3 similar proposals at the same time. Mar 27, 2017 at 11:07
