Proposal: Artificial Intelligence

I have a few questions about NLP (working with SyntaxNet). SyntaxNet is built on TensorFlow, so I presume questions about it would be on-topic on this site?

  • More questions like this one, please! I really believe that is how we can really define the scope of the proposal, and convince ourselves of the right thing to do (v.s. speculate).

    As a side note, I did create an NLP proposal one day but it got closed the next day for being a duplicate of linguistics.

  • Interesting. I remember seeing the proposal, and forgot about it... Then I don't get why Programmers (40K questions) and related are not part of SO (12M questions). Dodging any debate that would stem from this remark, do you think that a separate NLP proposal would make sense if an AI one was ongoing?

  • @EricPlaton Well, I don't see why Robert why wouldn't close the NLP proposal for the same reasons… Other than that, I guess we should first wait to see the kind of questions asked on AI.

This is a "non-answer": It depends.

Some heuristics, which reveal that there is no definite answer yet (at least in my head)...

  • If your questions relate to TensorFlow itself, then the TensorFlow team suggests using StackOverflow, where they are surely focusing their efforts.
  • If your questions are about relations between NLP and intelligence (e.g. on techniques, definition of languages for intent exchange, use in argumentation theory or other "higher-level" usage of NLP), then I believe this proposal is a good host candidate.
  • If your questions focuses on some technical aspect, say statistical, they would probably better fit on Cross Validated, or perhaps Data Science.

Phrased another way, a criteria to be on this site is that the topic of your NLP question must relate to the implementation of mechanisms that an external human observer would qualify as "intelligent" (the so-called "narrow" branch of AI).
