Proposal: Language Learning

Are made up languages like Klingon on-topic? What about more realistic ones like Esperanto?

Maybe qns about Klingon are more at home in ScienceFictionFantasy SE :) But, a good qn nevertheless. Maybe, that can be decided in the scope slowly once the site is created!

  • Klingon is a fictional language. A fake language would be something like Jindai moji. Mar 21, 2016 at 10:30

I would assume many of the same principles that can be used to learn natural languages could be used to learn artificial languages, as long as they are designed for interpersonal communication (as opposed to a programming language for example).

  • We already have sample questions about Esperanto, so at least as far as the definition phase is concerned, they are on-topic.

Learning constructed languages (“conlangs”) should of course be on topic, unless there was a more specific site. These can be fictional and artificial auxiliary languages, e.g. Klingon and Esperanto respectively. Some of them have more speakers and learners than many natural languages, though hardly any native speakers.

Actually, I believe the proposed conlang.stackexchange.com should be more about creating and adapting such languages. Learning them should (only) be on topic at Language Learning. Specific conlang site proposals like Lojban and Esperanto can deal with both like most existing sites on natural languages do.
