Proposal: Ornithology

It looks like proposals like this one, such as ichthyology and the old bird watching proposal, haven't gotten enough support to launch. Perhaps a zoology/animals site would do better, but it seems like all these topics would be in-scope on either Biology.SE or Outdoors.SE.

It's a fair concern. I think this subject is deep enough to support its own standalone StackExchange site but your point about ichthyology is well taken. I guess I'll see what kind of support I get.

This is the third or fourth ornithology site to popup on Area 51. Each one has been closed as either lacking interest or as a duplicate or Outdoors or Biology.

  • Thanks Liam; I was unaware of the history. I'll just delete this since there doesn't seem to be a great deal of interest anyway. – Onorio Catenacci Feb 24 '16 at 15:44
  • You are more than welcome to participate in outdoors.stackexchange.com @OnorioCatenacci. Providing it's a bird watching type question we have a well established precedent that these are on topic. – Liam Feb 24 '16 at 16:18

I tend to agree with Onorio Catenacci, however I can't ignore the fact that it doesn't seem to either topics being really used. On the other hand, I don'tthink that they should be on Biology or Outdoors either. Perhaps, a joint .SE for /wildlife/ could be the solution, as it would mean that Bird Lovers, Fishers, Fishcaretakers, People who like to watch Squirrels and Racoons could all be fit in one place, amd as such, having a better chance at succeeeding.

As such, yes, I do believe that Orthonology is too narrow, but not because it's a small field, but because the interest shown, or rather, the quantity of users attracted hasn't been enough to warrant a Beta. As such, I'd suggest having a Wildlife.SE instead, that would cover both the already mentioned activities and others in the same area
