Proposal: Arts and Crafts

Will works with beads, that ones that you press with ironing paper, be on-topic?

@Flimzy That doesn't mean it's inappropriate for him to ask here... in fact, this is exactly what the discussions are for... and if someone has a question like this once it gets to beta, it's recommended that it be asked in Meta to see if it's on-topic. Your comments are not helpful.

  • @Catija: The Area51 Discussion zone is not meant to serve as a proxy definition phase during the commitment phase. Sure, clarification is meaningful sometimes. But this question isn't asking for clarification on. It's asking a definition-phase question. And perhaps more importantly, it's asking one that can probably be answered, if only by inference, by reading the existing definition questions.

  • @Flimzy And yet, a good portion of the discussions are "Is this on topic?". There's clearly a precedent for it.

  • @Catija: And roughly 98% of those come from people who don't know how Area 51 is intended to work, or are asking about subtle nuances that actually make sense for a discussion rather than for a definition phase question.

@Flimzy If you have a general issue about the use of the discussion area, perhaps you should open a discussion about it and get some feedback on it. If the questions weren't allowed, they would be closed or downvoted. This user is not asking a specific question, he is asking if a particular subject of questioning is OK. If you don't like the question flag or downvote, no need to be snarky and tell them to do something they may be unable to do for several months.

  • @Catija: I don't have a general issue with the use of the discussion area. I already know how it's intended to work, and believe me, I have downvoted and VtCed as appropriate. I also comment generously about the proper way to find out what's on topic. I'm not the only one.

  • @Catija: It's rare that I VtC questions like this, but I do almost always comment about the proper use of A51. Even if the question is welcome on the discussion zone, as you imply, that doesn't mean my comments to the effect of "Use the A51 system properly for greater effectiveness" are out of place. I think you're making a big deal out of nothing.

@Flimzy Did you actually read your first comment? You didn't tell the user that this type of question is inappropriate for the Discussions... you told them to go ask a question and see what happens. That may mean "This is an inappropriate question in the Discussion Zone" to you, but to me, a third-party, it looks like a snarky, unhelpful comment. Perhaps you should reconsider the content of your comments before you complain that I'm making a big deal. This may not be SE proper, but the first rule here is "Be Nice".

If you ask me, we should allow these questions.

I would recommend you to commit to this proposal and when private beta starts ask the question(s). After all, it's then that you actually define and refine the scope of this site.

You must log in to answer this question.
