I've seen discussion "questions" such as this one which don't appear to have any purpose besides promoting the proposal and announcing things for a site. I'm referring mainly to posts that are written in the question boxes but contain announcements, updates, news, and encouragement for followers. Is this an appropriate use of discussion questions or should a question like this be downvoted or closed?

Personally I'm an advocate for keeping discussion questions strictly on discussions about site material and how to use Area 51. If an announcement feature really is needed, it can be requested and added.
