Proposal: Arts and Crafts

I'm a bit late to this party, since it's already in commitment, but have we considered whether activities relating to 'Arts & Crafts' are on topic? I am thinking from the perspective of a hobbyist painter. For example:

  • Questions about pricing/selling artwork? e.g. Should I try and charge more for a creation I think is better?
  • Questions about exhibitions? e.g. How can I approach a local gallery about putting on an exhibition?
  • Questions about art collection/curation? e.g. How can I track down all the works in [artist]'s series?

These are questions which would be of interest, and answerable by a community of 'arts and craftsers' (is there an umbrella term?).

Maybe this is too Fine Art-centric (I came here to see if there was a Painters/Fine Artists proposal and found this one instead).

  • add the "discussion" tag to this question. That way it will receive a bump and get on the top of list of questions and others will be able to see it. Jul 4, 2015 at 3:45

Questions about art collection/curation? e.g. How can I track down all the works in [artist]'s series?

Is this SE about creating or consuming? In my mind, this SE is for the person doing the creative activity, not the consumer trying to buy or collect it, making such questions off topic.

The business side of the questions could quickly go tangential to the core discussion. The questions proposed above looked acceptable. I propose questions like the following are off-topic:

  • Do I need to collect taxes when I sell something?
  • How much space to I need to open a store?
  • Should I start an LLC to sell my stuff?
  • Which software should I use to track my sales?

Clarification:

This proposal IS about drawing and painting, as well as crafts.

Absolutely on topic in my opinion.

But just to be very sure that we are on the same page, I suggest you to post some example questions in your OP so that other people can also chip in with their opinions.

Update:

Should I try and charge more for a creation I think is better?

IMO, this seems to be an opinion based question unless you specify your definition of the word better, and on what criteria you think you should fix price of your arts and crafts.

How can I approach a local gallery about putting on an exhibition?

IMO, you'll have to specify what problems are you facing in approaching the local gallery. What doubts you have in mind regarding that? What did you try and how did they react?

How can I track down all the works in [artist]'s series?

I have no clue regarding this one so won't comment.

In nutshell, IMO, all opinion based questions regarding Arts and Crafts can be on topic on this site if you present them in a good subjective manner.

  • Thanks. I got that drawing and painting was in there (I assumed it wasn't a site dedicated to the Arts & Crafts movement from ~1880-1920), but not how far the site went in terms of related subject matter.

  • @fredley I have edited my answer. Have a look, but that is only my opinion. People disagreeing should down vote this and write their opinion as a separate answer for others to vote on. Jul 2, 2015 at 3:42

I agree but I want to make a separate discussion regarding the last question.
