Proposal: Arts and Crafts

Based on this discussion, we seem quite sure that we want a definition instead of a list.

But how should we define arts and crafts? We don't need to have it 100% nailed down for now - that's what beta phase is for. However, we do need a reasonable description to be at the top of the page for commitment phase. Suggestions?

  • @TheIndependentAquarius The reason I put a placeholder was that I was a bit worried about us going to commitment phase (we only need 7 more questions) with a description that people had agreed they definitely didn't want. Commented May 31, 2015 at 12:48

Alternative wording:

Proposed Q&A site for questions about traditional artwork and handmade items.

I think this covers all kinds of art and crafts (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!). It's pretty broad, so might also cover some other things, but perhaps that's not something to worry about prematurely, and is better than leaving anyone out. (N.B. I put the word traditional in to mean paintings and drawings, not photography or music or theatre. If you just say "art" there's a lot of room for interpretation. But like anything else this can be discussed.)

  • I think you should put two definitions in two separate answers so people can upvote what they like. Commented May 31, 2015 at 23:36

  • I think this definition is better than the current. This is not confusing at least. Commented Jun 1, 2015 at 1:09

I know 2 votes is hardly a consensus, and normally I'd wait a bit longer, but since we are so close to the end of definition phase I've updated to this phrasing for now at least. We can always edit again if necessary. Commented Jun 1, 2015 at 18:04
  • I don't think I like the "traditional" and "handmade" qualifiers, even though I know Graphic Design stack covers a lot digital stuff. An example question is "What Real Brush settings can I use in Corel Painter X to best simulate a flat graphite stick?" The expertise of someone familiar with the traditional media and digital tool would be necessary to answer the question.

Perhaps we're overthinking this...?

Proposed Q&A site for questions about arts and crafts.

For completeness and voting here is the option I originally had in the question:

Proposed Q&A site for questions about making decorative or useful items by hand.

In my opinion this

  • includes 2D art (paintings, etc.)
  • includes decorative functional items (e.g. pottery)
  • includes purely functional items (e.g. a wooden box) as long as they are made by hand
  • excludes performing arts, literature, or any other form of art that doesn't have a physical presence
