Proposal: Sexuality

I’m going to be honest about my age and say I am 15. Despite the fact that most of you probably wouldn’t want me here, I would really appreciate this site, as – like most 15 year olds, probably – I’m kind of confused as to just who I am, including but not limited to sexually. This would likely be a really big help for me, so am I allowed to be here?

In a very real sense, no one can prevent you, and nothing negative will happen to you if you are, so yeah. You are by default. That's a good life lesson generally, by the way. Unless a club explicitly denies you membership, you're allowed in. And by asking, you make it that much less likely that they'll let you join (because you make them consider reasons why you wouldn't be allowed, and when making decisions people have a recency / availability bias. Flaw in human cognition). So, in future, don't ask. Or, to quote a great programmer: "It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission." Jun 18, 2015 at 3:10

Are you a human being? If so, chances are you are a sexual being as well. The better informed you are, the safer you will be, and the more likely you are to make good decisions. In this case, as in nearly every case, more information is always better than less information.

Yes.

The site is for education. If you can act in a mature manner around the topic of sexuality and have a learning attitude, I think you're good.

Tangentially related: If you're worried about being “only 15”, consider that legal age of consent ≤ 15 in many places. It's deeeefinitely OK to be interested in sex and sexuality at your age.

The age of consent defines with a person of which age an adult person os allowed to have sex. This age does not define at which age you are allowed to learn or read about sexuality. DJ Aftershock did not want to know if he/she is allowed to have sex with other people. (s)he wanted to know if it is allowed to participate with this board, and I think that the age of consent has nothing to do with this question. Apr 25, 2015 at 8:01

@HubertSchölnast I agree—that bit was irrelevant to the main question. It was meant as a response to the asker's insecurity about their age. Edited to clarify.

I would certainly hope that someone is allowed to learn about sexuality before the age when they are allowed to have sex, so age of consent seems very relevant here.

I don't know where you are coming from. But where I live (Austria in European Union) you are taught about sexuality in school, starting at the age of 6. The topic is chosen according to the age of the children. Younger kids learn what the differences between a boy and a girl are, and what happens when a woman gets pregnant.

When kids are in the age where puberty starts, they learn about what is happening with their bodies. And they learn about the possibilities of contraception. When you're old enough (i believe it's 14+) teachers also talk about porn (but don't show it) and how it differs from the sex that "normal" people have. You also learn about homosexuality, transsexuality and other things like this. Some teachers also show sex-toys to students of your age, and explain how they work, but this is a subject of discussion. Not all parents like this kind of instructions.

This board is not about pornography. It is about sexuality. And when you are old enough to be interested in it, then you are old enough to learn about it. So I think that this board must be open for everybody, and for people of every age.

Nobody ever really taught this to me, I learned all about sex from overhearing talk. I was about to say I learned from friends, but, that would sound wrong.

  • @unsoetr - I would say it varies as much from school to school and teacher to teacher as it does from country to country. My high school was a Catholic school and flatly refused to teach anything but the basics (man + woman + 9 months = baby), whereas the public school down the road apparently showed educational, real-life videos and had a 'practical' segment of opening/unrolling a condom.

  • In India here, this term is a ''taboo''. I was never taught the same openly in any of the classes, and still I am unaware of most of that. I've committed this proposal to learn more and more of it. May 27, 2015 at 5:43
