Proposal: Magic the Gathering

We currently have a Board and Card games Stack Exchange, which allows Magic the Gathering questions. What would this proposal do differently from them?

Because Magic is so varied, you'd have to create a ton of tags.

e.g.

mtg-commander mtg-standard mtg-khans-of-takir mtg-core-set-2015 mtg-draft mtg-card-value mtg-instant mtg-socery mtg-enchanment mtg-rules mtg-judges-corner mtg-tournaments mtg-pro-tour mtg-morphs

This is only a small list of what can be done, magic: the gathering keeps getting closed when it needs a dedicated site because of how vast it is. It would be different, like Dungeons and Dragons, there's only one 5th edition, but there are so many packs and core sets of Magic: The Gathering that alter rules, add rules, change banned cards for standard but unban cards for modern. There's also the online games and so on..

Also, you say there is a dedicated boards and game site with a mtg tag so there is no need for a dedicated site. However, there's an ubuntu tag for Unix but there's a dedicated site for Ubuntu because Ubuntu has so many unique features.. like with MTG, there is so much that can't be covered with one tag, it needs a site.

  • Stackoverflow gets by with a tag covering am entire programming language. But, a quick look on board & card games shows that the mtg tag has 1400 questions, which perhaps lends some credence to this proposal. The big question, I imagine, is whether enough people would get involved in a dedicated site to make it viable.

    That's because a programming language doesn't have 4 sets released a year, a language only updates every so often and then a new tag is created, e.g. html and hmtl5 plus a language doesnt have different game modes and tournaments

3 main things:

  1. More Magic-specific features. Currently, I believe the only MTG-specific feature is the [mtg:] card links. First of all, these links are vastly inferior to the way links worked on draw3cards. They don't work with all card names; and they don't allow hover-images. Draw3cards had other MTG-specific features, such as tags to make mana symbols.

  2. Increased membership from people who are looking for an MTG site. Plenty of people may have questions about MTG, but not think to go to a "board and card games" site to ask those questions. Similarly, rules experts and judges may be looking to answer questions about MTG, but not think to hang out at a site that's meant for board games in general.

  3. Game-specific tags. Tagging specific sets or mechanics would make it easier for MTG players to find the questions they are looking for, or care to follow.

    1. Besides the card links, have the features you mention been requested on BCG? 3. Can you give any examples of questions or topics on BCG that would benefit from that tagging scheme, i.e. would be easier to find on a dedicated MTG site than they are on the current site using the [magic-the-gathering] tag?

    I meant a request for an actual feature on the site, like this one. Though I suspect that that particular feature was not implemented due to copyright concerns.
