Proposal: Music Fans

For example, back in the 80's a friend of mine showed me an LP that was by some American band from 60's or 70's. Most (or maybe all) of the songs in the LP referred to a fictional story of some space-faring crew (pirates, if I remember correctly).

It would be great to find out what group made that LP.

Would this be possible? If not, how about extending "Movies & TV" to "Movies, TV, and Music"?

  • @user3169: That's not entirely true. We generally want StackExchange to be the search result on Google when you search for certain things. So a question being google-able is not a reason for it to be off-topic.

    Rewritten due to incorrect link--Take a look at Are “Guess This Song” Appropriate On Music Fans? if you haven't already. Your question may be OK because someone will have to pick their brain to answer it, and you give a good reason for asking. But questions that can be easily answered by searching on the internet should be avoided.

I'm going to say yes, but I'm not 100% sure. From what I remember from the similar topics raised in Music: Practice & Theory, people who look for song identifications are redirected here,

  • Many MP&T folk have directed people at this proposal, myself included, but ultimately the actual scope of this has nothnig to do with what we say over there. This should be decided by and for Music Fans.

I'd say yes - 100% sure. If you look over at the 'sciFi & fantasy' & 'movies' areas, these are full of 'identify this book/film' Why should music be any different ?

    Regarding questions like "I remember a song in the 70s that had the lyrics [So we sailed on to the sun], could you tell me what song this is" might be good for getting volume and accumulating reputation, but there will be no insightful information ar anything that can't be found on many other websites (Google first search page was filled with lyric sites to answer this).
